But… then came Keto, and my body has become less fat, my skin less ruddy, wrinkly, and blotchy, and my energy and stamina are awesome. But, most importantly, my mental health has dramatically improved. Very quickly the anxiety episodes spread apart and the irritation and discomfort began to decline. And now my body sails through most challenges with dignity and, best of all, that charicteristic implacable calm that I haven’t felt in years.

Full story: Most of my life I have been a very calm person who very rarely got rattled by circumstances; content, peace-loving, and pretty happy. Cue what I assume was the inevitable breakdown of my immune defenses against carbohydrate-induced inflammation, add the stress of two pregnancies on my body … and that calm was shattered. I didn’t have it as bad as many, but it was getting progressively worse. Panicky episodes were getting closer together, I would lose my temper at my kids more often, and felt irritated, hot, and uncomfortable in general all the time. If I had continued the SAD for another few years, I truly believe I would have ended up in therapy and on medication.
For example, say someone requires 2,000 calories per day and is eating 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. That would come out to 1,500 calories/167 grams of fat, 400 calories/100 grams of protein, and 100 calories/25 grams of carbs. This person would need to make sure they stay at or below 25 grams of carbs each day.
If you experience keto flu, drink plenty of water. Increasing your salt intake can also help minimize symptoms. Another option is to lower your carb intake gradually. This will extend the amount of time it takes to get you into ketosis but will make for a much more pleasant experience.
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fueling brain-function. However, if there is little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures. Almost half of children, and young people, with epilepsy who have tried some form of this diet saw the number of seizures drop by at least half, and the effect persists even after discontinuing the diet. There is some evidence that adults with epilepsy may benefit from the diet, and that a less strict regimen, such as a modified Atkins diet, is similarly effective. The most common adverse effect is constipation, affecting about 30% of patients—this was due to fluid restriction, which was once a feature of the diet, but this led to increased risk of kidney stones and is no longer considered beneficial.

I see and hear a lot of people fumbling when it comes to cooking for others. There’s a lot of reasons why people struggle with this, but my Oopsie Burger will both feed, and impress, whoever you are entertaining.
Our main goal here is to stay pretty simple at first. In my eyes, simplicity is key for someone that is just starting out on a low carb diet. You don’t want it to be a difficult transition (kitchen-wise), because it will be hard to just get rid of your cravings.
Use Organic Broths: Sipping on broths throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated while also getting additional minerals and amino acids into your system. Try a good organic, free-range or pasture-raised chicken or beef broth. This can be a traditional broth or even bone broth.

Each book contains 30 recipes. Every recipe is made with just 5 ingredients and has up to 5 grams of net carbs. That means you can have seconds of any meal and you’ll still be within your daily carb limit!
Using a meal plan when you start the keto diet can greatly help you succeed. If you know what’s coming up next, you’re much less likely to give up and order food from your favorite takeout restaurant.
If you aren’t in the mood to plan meals right now then you can just go off of what your body tells you and eat what when you feel hungry although this usually means you fall short of your macro goals.
Here are a few of the most common side effects that I come across when people first start keto. Frequently the issues relate to dehydration or lack of micronutrients (vitamins) in the body. Make sure that you’re drinking enough water (close to a gallon a day) and eating foods with good sources of micronutrients. To read more on micronutrients, click here >
Many workout programs have you consuming a large number of carbs to fuel your workouts. While on keto you don’t need to bulk up on the carbs but you can fill up your glycogen stores so that you have glucose ready for a workout.
“Yes, tracking macros can be cumbersome and tedious, but it’s absolutely essential during the first few weeks of a keto diet,” says Wittrock. “The diet likely goes against everything you have done before, so tracking your macros gives you feedback and allows you to troubleshoot until you get the hang of it.”
Elevated levels of ketones (the acetoacetate group, to be specific) can be instantly detected in your urine using strips such as KetoStrips. After dipping one of these strips into your urine stream, you’ll be able to find out which stage of ketosis you’re in based on the color guide provided.
Most carbs you consume are broken down into sugar that enters the bloodstream. When you rein in carbohydrates on the keto diet, you have lower levels of blood glucose (high blood glucose can lead to diabetes). A study in the journal Nutrition reveals that a ketogenic diet improves blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetics more significantly than a low-calorie diet and can also decrease the dosage of your diabetes meds.
So got into the fabled onederland yesterday after having not weighed myself for several days. Posted about it (and about impending separation which generated several kind and supporting messages — Thanks!!).
When I first tried MCT oil a while ago, I didn’t know about the potential side effects and digestive discomfort. If you are new to MCTs, make sure you start with a small amount (such as a teaspoon) and gradually add more to avoid stomachache and/ or diarrhoea.

Carbohydrates (carbs) are a macronutrient found in things like starches, grains and foods high in sugar. This includes, but isn’t limited to, bread, flour, rice, pasta, beans, potatoes, sugar, syrup, cereals, fruits, bagels and soda.
Keto flu is a very common experience for new ketoers, but it often goes away after just a few days – and there are ways to minimize or even eliminate it. When transitioning to keto, you may feel some slight discomfort including fatigue, headache, nausea, cramps, etc.
Besides being fantastic for its versatile cooking applications, cauliflower is very low carb at only 2g net carbs per cup. It’s very high in both vitamin K and C and is associated with lowered risk of heart disease and cancer (similarly to broccoli).
TD LR: I started Keto on April 1st, and I’ve lost nearly 20 pounds in 2.5 months, which has been so great, but the most amazing part of this whole journey has been the total elimination of an increasingly problematic anxiety disorder.
Unlike many fad diets that come and go with very limited rates of long-term success, the ketogenic diet or keto diet has been practiced for more than nine decades (since the 1920s) and is based upon a solid understanding of physiology and nutrition science.
Net carbs are used because dietary fiber does not have a significant metabolic effect. We are trying to get as accurate of a picture as possible when tracking macros, therefor net carbs is what makes the most sense.
