A: It’s understandable if you don’t want to stick to keto because trying new foods is part of the holiday experience. Just do not to gorge on carbs full on and maybe try some stuff here and there. It may be better to stay generally low carb (less than 100g). However, expect to feel like crap for a few days and you’ll probably gain some water weight. Just get right back to it after the holiday. Although your cravings would probably be back which would make keto more difficult to stick to than the first time around.
Keto flu is a very common experience for new ketoers, but it often goes away after just a few days – and there are ways to minimize or even eliminate it. When transitioning to keto, you may feel some slight discomfort including fatigue, headache, nausea, cramps, etc.
This means that instead of generating tons of ketones from the very beginning, most people experience hypoglycemia for a period of time. With hypoglycemia comes a disruption in cortisol signaling which is what accounts for the HPA axis dysfunction. Finally, HPA axis dysfunction leads to an increase in secretion of minerals from the body in the urine.
Macronutrient ratios are very important on a ketogenic diet. The macro ratios on a keto diet typically look like this (for simplicity’s sake, the following percentages are based on the standard ketogenic diet approach):
On the ketogenic diet, carbohydrates are restricted and so cannot provide for all the metabolic needs of the body. Instead, fatty acids are used as the major source of fuel. These are used through fatty-acid oxidation in the cell’s mitochondria (the energy-producing parts of the cell). Humans can convert some amino acids into glucose by a process called gluconeogenesis, but cannot do this by using fatty acids. Since amino acids are needed to make proteins, which are essential for growth and repair of body tissues, these cannot be used only to produce glucose. This could pose a problem for the brain, since it is normally fuelled solely by glucose, and most fatty acids do not cross the blood–brain barrier. However, the liver can use long-chain fatty acids to synthesise the three ketone bodies β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone. These ketone bodies enter the brain and partially substitute for blood glucose as a source of energy.
What if I told you that butter in coffee and coconut oil in coffee is not only healthy, but actually quite tasty? It’s true! Keto coffee gives you all of the coffee benefits plus so much more. No longer will your morning java be a jittery jolt with useless calories.
After initiation, the child regularly visits the hospital outpatient clinic where he or she is seen by the dietitian and neurologist, and various tests and examinations are performed. These are held every three months for the first year and then every six months thereafter. Infants under one year old are seen more frequently, with the initial visit held after just two to four weeks. A period of minor adjustments is necessary to ensure consistent ketosis is maintained and to better adapt the meal plans to the patient. This fine-tuning is typically done over the telephone with the hospital dietitian and includes changing the number of calories, altering the ketogenic ratio, or adding some MCT or coconut oils to a classic diet. Urinary ketone levels are checked daily to detect whether ketosis has been achieved and to confirm that the patient is following the diet, though the level of ketones does not correlate with an anticonvulsant effect. This is performed using ketone test strips containing nitroprusside, which change colour from buff-pink to maroon in the presence of acetoacetate (one of the three ketone bodies).
NOTE: The main exception to ketoacidosis is type 1 diabetics – it can happen when insulin levels are severely low which is rare in someone with a normally functioning pancreas. Dangerously high ketone levels result in insulin secretion.
Keep it straightforward and strict. You usually see better results in people who restrict their carb intake further. Try to keep your carbs as low as possible for the first month of keto. Keep it strict by cutting out excess sweets and artificial sweeteners altogether (like diet soda). Cutting these out dramatically decreases sugar cravings.
Today, new studies show that fats are not the real culprit[*]. A ketogenic diet dispels the “fat makes you fat” philosophy for several reasons. First, a diet high in carbs (especially refined and processed carbs from low-fat diet products) can increase insulin and blood sugar levels and promote inflammation in the body. In contrast, a low carb diet can help reduce inflammation far better than a low-fat diet[*].

During the 1920s and 1930s, when the only anticonvulsant drugs were the sedative bromides (discovered 1857) and phenobarbital (1912), the ketogenic diet was widely used and studied. This changed in 1938 when H. Houston Merritt and Tracy Putnam discovered phenytoin (Dilantin), and the focus of research shifted to discovering new drugs. With the introduction of sodium valproate in the 1970s, drugs were available to neurologists that were effective across a broad range of epileptic syndromes and seizure types. The use of the ketogenic diet, by this time restricted to difficult cases such as Lennox–Gastaut syndrome, declined further.
Both animal fats (saturated fats) and plant-based fats can be consumed on the keto diet. Healthy fat sources include butter, tallow and ghee from animals or coconut oil, olive oil, sustainable palm oil and MCT oil from plants.
Still, it can be hard to get enough fat in the early days. Butter, nuts, coconut and olive oils, and fatty cuts of meat are all on the menu. However, don’t go overboard with polyunsaturated fats like soybean, corn, or sunflower oil. Keto dieters who increase their intake of those fats often end up with gastrointestinal distress that causes them to jump ship too soon.
The best type of vegetables for a ketogenic diet are both high in nutrients and low in carbohydrates. As most of you can guess, these are dark and leafy. Anything that resembles spinach or kale will fall into this category and will be the best vegetable to include into dishes/meals.
In the mid-1990s, Hollywood producer Jim Abrahams, whose son’s severe epilepsy was effectively controlled by the diet, created the Charlie Foundation to promote it. Publicity included an appearance on NBC’s Dateline programme and …First Do No Harm (1997), a made-for-television film starring Meryl Streep. The foundation sponsored a multicentre research study, the results of which—announced in 1996—marked the beginning of renewed scientific interest in the diet.
Crack egg into each jar. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Transfer jars to deep baking dish and pour enough boiling water into baking pan to come halfway up the sides of the jars. Cover entire pan with aluminum foil and bake for 18-20 minutes.
Why do you want to start a ketogenic diet? Do you want to finally lose the stubborn excess body weight you’ve been lugging around? Are you looking for better mental clarity and more energy? Or will you be using a ketogenic diet to lower your blood sugar and cholesterol levels and find better overall health?
Making any new change can seem overwhelming, but having a plan in place will set you up for success. View recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, snacks and dessert on this site, or download the Perfect Keto Recipes Ebook.
In order to transition and remain in ketosis, aiming for about 30–50 net grams is typically the recommended amount of carbs to start with. This is considered a more moderate or flexible approach but can be less overwhelming to begin with.
These individuals would benefit from taking a bulking and binding agent such as psyllium husk, citrus pectin, or my favorite, activated charcoal. I have people do 2-3 grams of activated charcoal every 3 hours until the diarrhea subsides.
These are some of the lesser common problems that I am e-mailed about on a semi-consistent basis. Many of these problems also relate to hydration and micronutrients, so make sure that you are drinking plenty of water and replenishing electrolytes.
Firstly, two weeks is not a stall. Second, most of the weight you lost on your first week is water and your losses should slow down after that. Weight loss is not linear and there are times when you just maintain or even gain. As long as you are doing everything right, the weight will come off sooner or later. If you’re still not losing, double check what you’re doing. Have you recalculated your macros and calories since you last lost weight? Are you tracking everything (including the tbsp of oil or 5 extra almonds)? Are there any hidden carbs you didn’t take into account (spices, onions, garlic etc)? Some people stall on things like dairy and artificial sweeteners so try cutting them out and see if anything changes.
If you keep your intake in check, you may still notice an increase in weight because of glycogen stores refilling. Many people find they stick to keto or a low-carb diet simply because it makes them feel better.
Back to the restaurant analogy, this is the stage where you make a plan how you are going to get from your house to the restaurant. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Pull up a spreadsheet, notepad, napkin, anything… and make a plan. The most important questions to ask yourself are,
Cravings are insanely hard to deal with, and I’m no exception by any means. But it made me think about all the other foods I love but choose not to eat now because I don’t want to feel like a bloated, walking pile of water trash every day anymore. Sugar is like a drug, right? Is it possible that all these foods: bread, pizza crust, chips, fries, pasta- don’t actually taste like anything and aren’t inherently delicious, but its the way our brains receive sugar that makes us think its our favorite? I think I probably answered my own question but it really blew me away. I wish there was a way to share how I feel with people who want to do keto, but end up quitting because they can’t let go of their favorite carbs. I feel like once I realized the truth about my “favorite” foods, it made sticking to keto so much easier.
During this time, you will likely feel a significant drop in strength and ability to exert physical energy. Luckily, once you become adapted you should see drastic improvements in these areas that are even greater than when you were sugar-adapted!
If you start to feel light-headed or experience heart palpitations, this may be due to a drop in blood pressure. It may be helpful to monitor your blood pressure during this time to quantify your body’s response to the initial adaptation phase.
Our main goal here is to stay pretty simple at first. In my eyes, simplicity is key for someone that is just starting out on a low carb diet. You don’t want it to be a difficult transition (kitchen-wise), because it will be hard to just get rid of your cravings.
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are extracted from coconut oil. They’re known to improve brain function and support ketosis. In most supplements, the taste is neutral and you won’t be able to detect it when used in recipes. There are three main products on the market: MCT Oil, XCT Oil and Brain Octane Oil.
When you eat a high-fat diet, you slow down your gastric emptying and your motility, which can set you up for constipation, says Jadin. Making sure you’re getting that extra bit of sodium, eating enough fiber-filled non-starchy vegetables and drinking plenty of fluids (since you urinate more on the keto diet) can move things along.
Excess calcium in the urine (hypercalciuria) occurs due to increased bone demineralisation with acidosis. Bones are mainly composed of calcium phosphate. The phosphate reacts with the acid, and the calcium is excreted by the kidneys.
One area where food tracking can be especially helpful, though, is ensuring that you’re hitting the right ratios of macronutrients—protein, carbs, and fat. “The most researched version of the ketogenic diet derives 70 percent of calories from healthy fats, 20 percent from protein, and only 10 percent from carbs,” explains Charles Passler, D.C., nutritionist, and founder of Pure Change. “In the ideal world, each keto meal and snack should have that same (70/20/10) ratio of macronutrients, but studies have shown that you’ll still achieve great results even if each meal varies slightly from that ratio, just as long as you don’t exceed 50 grams per day of carbs, or eat those carbs in one sitting,” says Passler. In order to achieve these ratios without a preset meal plan from a dietitian or doctor, some food tracking is probably going to be necessary. But once you get the hang of things, you may not need it anymore.
MCTs are a type of fat that can be readily used for energy by your body and do not have to be broken down before use. They are precursors to ketones and help your body burn fat instead of burning carbs. The primary whole food source of MCTs are coconuts.
It’s best to choose grass-fed meat, if possible. That’s because animals that eat grass produce meat with higher amounts of omega-3 fats, conjugated linoleic acid and antioxidants than meat from grain-fed animals (32).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can be times of extreme physical vulnerability, and unless medically prescribed by a doctor, the ketogenic diet could do more harm than good. Likewise, certain conditions respond better to high carb and lower protein diets (like certain hormone imbalances or autoimmune diseases), so consider your individual circumstances above all else.
The most science-backed performance-boosting supplements, such as creatine monohydrate, beta-alanine, and caffeine, are all A-OK on the ketogenic diet. So, if you take a pre-workout, you should be able to continue without issue. I would also recommend gulping down some bouillon before your session to ensure your sodium and magnesium levels are on point.
Vegetarians and vegans are used to eating more healthy grains and carbs than fat. We know vegetarians and vegans who struggled to give up and replace their usual meals of sandwiches, pastas and starchy vegetables.

I am in shock. I have been feeling bad because I had plateaued a couple of months back, and had actually started to gain weight. I’m up 10 lbs fro the last time I bought pants, and I was a 46 then. Apparently, my weight is shifting around because even though I’m up in weight, I’m down in the waist.
The ketone blood monitor is the most accurate ketosis testing method. A blood monitor measures your state of ketosis by detecting the amount of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in your blood, which is one of the primary ketones.(28)
Full-fat dairy products, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, cream, sour cream, goat cheese, and other cheeses. Note: Dairy should be eaten sparingly, but when you do eat it, stick with full-fat, as it’s more filling and nutritious.
As for branched-chain amino acids, you’ll find smart people who swear that they’re keto-friendly, and others who won’t. One of the BCAAs, valine, can be glucogenic, meaning that it can lead to glucose production and potentially contribute to leaving ketosis behind.1 But does that mean it will happen? Not necessarily, particularly if you’re just an occasional supplement user.
and combating hypothyroidism. I also forgot to mention I’m a long haul (international) Airline Pilot; a lifestyle that pretty much guarantees chronic sleep debt. Also not good for my autoimmune condition.
We’re fasting! Black coffee if you’re a caffeine addict like me. Tea, if you are not into the coffee so much. Tea can add great health benefits like coffee also. Some of the great benefits of green tea are:
Option 1: Spinach, mushroom, and feta omelet with keto coffee (coffee with adding fat such as MCT oil, butter, or bone broth protein). “This breakfast is a good source of protein and healthy fats that will keep you feeling full to curb midmorning cravings,” says Dr. Axe.
Last I posted was about my face gains after the haircut. Am another 2 kilos down since then (in less than 2 weeks). It’s almost like my body only now became fat adapted and started losing fat really quickly. Still far from my target weight (GW: 75 Kilos, CW: 90 kilos, SW: 99 kilos) but got a really pleasant surprise this week!
