Keep it straightforward and strict. You usually see better results in people who restrict their carb intake further. Try to keep your carbs as low as possible for the first month of keto. Another difference between older and newer studies is that the type of patients treated with the ketogenic diet has changed over time. When first developed and used, the ketogenic diet was not a treatment of last resort; in contrast, the children in modern studies have already tried and failed a number of anticonvulsant drugs, so may be assumed to have more difficult-to-treat epilepsy. Early and modern studies also differ because the treatment protocol has changed. In older protocols, the diet was initiated with a prolonged fast, designed to lose 5–10% body weight, and heavily restricted the calorie intake. Concerns over child health and growth led to a relaxation of the diet’s restrictions. Fluid restriction was once a feature of the diet, but this led to increased risk of constipation and kidney stones, and is no longer considered beneficial.
For many years, butter and cream were believed to cause or contribute to heart disease due to their high saturated fat contents. However, several large studies have shown that, for most people, saturated fat isn’t linked to heart disease.

There are theoretically no restrictions on where the ketogenic diet might be used, and it can cost less than modern anticonvulsants. However, fasting and dietary changes are affected by religious and cultural issues. A culture where food is often prepared by grandparents or hired help means more people must be educated about the diet. When families dine together, sharing the same meal, it can be difficult to separate the child’s meal. In many countries, food labelling is not mandatory so calculating the proportions of fat, protein and carbohydrate is difficult. In some countries, it may be hard to find sugar-free forms of medicines and supplements, to purchase an accurate electronic scale, or to afford MCT oils.
Below you’ll find a visual guide to higher carb vegetables and vegetables with some color. Generally, the brighter and more colorful the vegetable, the less low-carb they are. There are a few exceptions like bell peppers and jalapenos, which can be used for added texture and flavor in meals.
I use an Oster blender. I have used the long arm on my Kitchen Aid hand mixer (works well) and an immersion blender (slightly messier). I believe a portable frother is a good option, as well. I hope this helps.
People often argue that performance is affected when on a keto diet, but that’s not true. Well, not in the long run. In the short-term, you may notice some small physical performance drops, but this will subside as you continue replenishing fluids, electrolytes, and adapt to the fat intake.

The keto flu can often be shortened or avoided completely by taking one of our ketone supplements, which help switch the body into ketosis instantly. They make the transition period much shorter and easier.

I was recommended to use Great Lakes brand gelatin. I usually buy the porcine one since it is colorless – better to use for a variety of cooking as it doesn’t color foods brown. I think they also have beef though. I am curious what Dr. Axe would think of the porcine gelatin since the recipe specifies beef. I get it at a local health food store, but just checked on Vitacost and they have it there, too. Probably Amazon, etc.
Depends where you are starting from. If you are at 1.5 mmol ketones, drinking 7g carbs, by itself won’t “throw you out.” How many carbs do you eat for the entire day? Entire week? These will be more indicative factors. It would be good to test your levels if you are curious.
And while we only store enough glucose for about 24 hours of energy, fat can be stored in the body to provide months worth of energy, which is why people can survive fasting (10). The amount of fat your body can utilize for energy will depend on your body composition and fat percentage.
“The cleaner, the better when it comes to the keto diet,” says Jadin. Focus on “whole” and “unprocessed.” Also, strive for a mix of saturated and unsaturated fats for balance. Note: Tipping the scale toward too much protein is a common pitfall many people make on the keto diet. Mind your protein intake, since too much can kick you out of ketosis, says Jadin.
A: Although desirable, there’s no requirement to eat organic or grass fed. Just get whatever cheap meat and veggies and eggs you can find. Frozen is usually cheaper and wait till something’s on sale and stock up. You don’t need to buy all the fancy things like nut flours, MCT oil, psyllium husk, xantham gum etc. Just keep meals simple and it can all be easy and cheap.
Just the other day, I listened as a friend told a story about his neighbor, Kathy. She started showing signs of memory loss and forgetfulness almost a year ago. Her husband quit his job, and they took to traveling before it got worse.
