It is possible to consume too much protein on the ketogenic diet. While low carb diets call for a higher protein intake, those on the standard ketogenic diet eat only a moderate amount of protein. Why? Because your body can actually break down protein for glucose (known as gluconeogenesis), thus preventing the body from reaching full ketosis.
With inflammation driving most chronic diseases, the keto diet is anti-inflammatory and may help ease some inflammation-related pain conditions, according to researchers at Trinity College. One mechanism at play: The keto diet eliminates sugar and processed foods that can lead to oxidative stress in the body, a cause of chronic inflammation.
You can measure if you’re in ketosis via urine or blood strips, though it’s not really worth it. The urine strips are considered pretty inaccurate (they more answer the question “Am I in ketosis?”), and the blood strips are expensive (up to $5 per strip). A: Although desirable, there’s no requirement to eat organic or grass fed. Just get whatever cheap meat and veggies and eggs you can find. Frozen is usually cheaper and wait till something’s on sale and stock up. You don’t need to buy all the fancy things like nut flours, MCT oil, psyllium husk, xantham gum etc. Just keep meals simple and it can all be easy and cheap.
Hydrating and Mineral Rich Foods: Consume plenty of hydrating, mineral-rich foods and use salt generously. I like to snack on celery, cucumbers, and especially seaweed in the form of these Sea Snax. These are like seaweed chips that taste great and contains a lot of beneficial minerals.
According to the reported results, patients lost an average of 10.2 kilograms, or about 22 pounds, after 2.5 cycles of the keto diet. Cappello concluded that the diet was a successful way for overweight and obese people to lose weight, and the few side effects, such as fatigue, are easily managed.
In fact, you should go overboard with the salt – salt everything! Sodium will help with water retention and help replenish the electrolytes. For most, this temporary groggy feeling is the biggest danger you’re going to face. It’s called the “Keto Flu.”
Restrict your carbohydrates. Most people tend to only focus only on net carbs. If you want great results, limit both. Try to stay below 20g net carbs and below 35g total carbs per day. If you need extra help, we also have a small guide on finding your keto carb limit >
My vision improved. I have been wearing spectacles for the last 11 years, with my power consistently being R: 150 and L: 75. Without my glasses, I always ended up having a headache. Three days ago, I took a photo and noticed how my eyes have become a lot more pronounced and told my wife how I never really realized I had good looking eyes (pardon the vanity).

Put all ingredients into a high-powered blender and blend until well combined. If you don’t have all the ingredients on hand, then you may choose to only go with grass-fed butter and/or coconut oil, for example, with the coffee. But the combo of all the ingredients raises the health quotient for this coffee.
It’s important to also drink lots of water. Getting enough water helps keep you from feeling fatigued, is important for digestion and aids in hunger suppression. It’s also needed for detoxification. Aim to drink 10–12 eight-ounce glasses a day.
The ketogenic diet is not a benign, holistic or natural treatment for epilepsy; as with any serious medical therapy, there may be complications. These are generally less severe and less frequent than with anticonvulsant medication or surgery. Common but easily treatable short-term side effects include constipation, low-grade acidosis and hypoglycaemia if there is an initial fast. Raised levels of lipids in the blood affect up to 60% of children and cholesterol levels may increase by around 30%. This can be treated by changes to the fat content of the diet, such as from saturated fats towards polyunsaturated fats, and, if persistent, by lowering the ketogenic ratio. Supplements are necessary to counter the dietary deficiency of many micronutrients.
A 12-week study in older adults found that those who consumed 7 ounces (210 grams) of ricotta cheese per day experienced increases in muscle mass and muscle strength over the course of the study (24).
Start Eating a Keto Diet – If you’re confused on where to start you can reference our Keto Basics Shopping List, or our YouTube channel where we share meal ideas and “Day of Eating” videos. It’s recommended to start by eating less than 20g of net carbs for the first month.
Targeted: On a targeted keto diet, you consume carbohydrates around your workouts to improve athletic performance without knocking yourself out of ketosis for too long. This version is also geared toward hardcore exercisers.
Your keto meals should contain high amounts of healthy fats (up to 80 percent of your total calories!), such as olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, palm oil, and some nuts and seeds. Fats are a critical part of every ketogenic recipe because fat is what provides energy and prevents hunger, weakness and fatigue.
If you’re looking for low-carb vegetables that aren’t leafy greens, think about the ones that grow above ground mostly from the cruciferous family. These include broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, lettuce, cucumbers, and more. You can use the visual guide to help decide which vegetables are best.
If you stumble on a recipe without a macro count, you can enter the ingredients into a diet app like KetoDietApp or MyFitnessPal to get the macros and calorie count of any meal sans complicated math equation.
I tried to scale the recipes as best as I could in this meal plan, but not every recipe will be scaled, and some recipes will give leftovers. Make sure you look a few days ahead in the meal plan, as some leftovers are used. Freeze things if you have too much leftovers. You can always re-use this food later on!
Higher cholesterol is generally due to HDL (the good cholesterol) increasing – lowering your chance of heart disease. You may see increased triglyceride counts, but that’s very common in people losing weight. These increases will subside as weight loss normalizes.
On a keto meal plan, feel free to fill your plate with low carb vegetables — particularly leafy greens. It’s a great way to get a healthy dose of micronutrients, thus preventing vitamin deficiencies on keto. Options like kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, peppers, spinach and onions are all great options.
Great article Doc! Question: One of the world top experts in high fat low carb diet, Dr Tim Noakes has stated that top level athletes actually perform better on keto, as himself an extreme marathoner , cured his type 2 diabetes by going keto. In the light of what we know today about keto, would you still assert that athletes shouldn’t adopt ketosis as their desired state?
To increase calories, it’s quite easy – increase the amounts of fat you eat. Olive oil, coconut oil, macadamia nuts, and butter are great ways to increase fats without getting too much of the other stuff in the way. Drizzle it on salads, slather it on vegetables, snack on it, do what you need to do to make it work in your favor!
Today is my third Wednesday on Keto (been weighing in on Wednesdays) and I finally broke out of the 90s weight. I started keto at 200lbs and weighed 189 this morning. I haven’t started working out yet so this is entirely just on keto diet. It’s the little milestones that keep me going!
Although egg yolks are high in cholesterol, consuming them doesn’t raise blood cholesterol levels in most people. In fact, eggs appear to modify the shape of LDL in a way that reduces the risk of heart disease (37).
Well this morning I got on the scale, and I’m officially 179.6! Yeah okay I’m still basically 180 but it was so exciting to finally get out of the 80s! I’m so happy and more committed to keep going! Keto is great.
Brew the coffee using your your preferred method (I recommend French press). To make one serving, use 2 1/2 tablespoons (13 g/ 0.4 oz) of ground coffee and a cup (240 ml/ 8 fl oz) of water. Place the ground coffee into the French press. Bring the water to a boil and let it cool for a minute. Pour the water into the French press and stir vigorously. Depending on the preferred strength, steep for 2-4 minutes. Then, press the plunger all the way down.
Net carbs are what we track when following a ketogenic diet. This calculation is pretty straightforward. Net Carbs = Total Carbs – Fiber. For example, 1 cup of broccoli has 6g of total carbs and 2.4g of fiber. That would mean 1 cup of broccoli has 3.6g of net carbs.
Intermittent fasting is using the same reasoning – instead of using the fats we are eating to gain energy, we are using our stored fat. That being said, you might think it’s great – you can just fast and lose more weight. You have to take into account that later on, you will need to eat extra fat in order to keep out of a starvation mode state.
On the ketogenic diet, carbohydrates are restricted and so cannot provide for all the metabolic needs of the body. Instead, fatty acids are used as the major source of fuel. These are used through fatty-acid oxidation in the cell’s mitochondria (the energy-producing parts of the cell). Humans can convert some amino acids into glucose by a process called gluconeogenesis, but cannot do this by using fatty acids. Since amino acids are needed to make proteins, which are essential for growth and repair of body tissues, these cannot be used only to produce glucose. This could pose a problem for the brain, since it is normally fuelled solely by glucose, and most fatty acids do not cross the blood–brain barrier. However, the liver can use long-chain fatty acids to synthesise the three ketone bodies β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone. These ketone bodies enter the brain and partially substitute for blood glucose as a source of energy.
Most fruits, unless listed above, should be completely eliminated due to the high quantities of sugar and carbohydrates. Apples, pineapple, watermelon, mango, oranges and most other fruits should be avoided. Dried fruits and fruit juice are also not permitted on keto.
Hey Darlene, sorry to hear about this. Start with making sure you are consuming plenty of water with electrolytes from a natural salt as outlined in this article. Using a multi vitamin could be beneficial too. If it resides I would suggest working with one of our coaches to see what is going on.
One of the best additions I have had is simple: egg yolk. The egg yolk is full of healthy fats, it adds some frothiness to the beverage (which I like). More importantly it is full of choline, which is important for brain health (like memory formation and learning). Because of the added choline I add a brain supplement called aniracetam (https://www.nootropedia.com/aniracetam/ )because that is fat soluble and works synergistically with choline to improve memory. Luckily, it does not have much of a taste so I don’t have to worry about it ruining the flavor of my drink.
Ketosis is basically when your body burns fat for fuel. It’s technically a metabolic state, but in easy to understand terms: Your body burns what it has the most of. When you’re eating a “normal” diet, which happens to be higher in carbs, your body burns glucose (sugar) for energy. So all the extra fat you’re carrying around just sits there.
You get to start experimenting more with dessert and dinner. You get to snack as you please inside your window and best of all – you get to eat that protein laden chicken that you’ve been missing so much of!
With that being said, there are of course days that are very hard for me, in particular my days off of work. It seems like every second Im thinking about a carb & sugar filled meal and even as im typing I am craving something that I would normally eat when not following a Keto lifestyle. This is not a normal craving where my taste buds are buzzing or im swallowing just thinking about said food. This craving is pure mental, where I simply remember the taste of a pasta or dessert I ate months ago.
If you’re still confused about what a net carb is, don’t worry – I’ll explain further. Let’s say for example you want to eat some broccoli (1 cup) – seriously my favorite and most delicious vegetable out there.
Thank you so much for the article. For me it came at the right time. I’ve just started the keto diet past 1 week and I already have some of the side effects popping up. Thank you thank you thank you so much… I’ll try these and hope to successfully complete the 3 months weight loss challenge.
Cramps (and more specifically leg cramps) are a pretty common thing when starting a ketogenic diet. It’s usually occurring in the morning or at night, but it’s a pretty minor issue overall. It’s a sign that there’s a lack of minerals, specifically magnesium, in the body.
No matter what your diet has been to this point, keto will be a big change. If you’re coming from a standard American diet (SAD) background, your carbs will go way down, protein may either go up or down, and fat will go way up. If you’re coming from a bodybuilding-style diet, your fat intake will jump to alarming levels, and your protein will likely drop significantly.
And guess what, we get to eat dessert this week! Woo! We’ll be creating some low carb and great tasting treats that will reward you ever so much for doing the fasting. Sweets, treats, and losing weight – lucky us, right?
I have been putting the bone brith collagen in my coffee as I find that it tastes best mixed in coffee. I also just started adding coconut oil and the butter. Due to kidney disease, I am limited in my protein and with diverticulitis, I am limited in my cruciferous veggies, etc. Any recommendations??
There are mixed and matched studies on keto and breastfeeding, though nothing is well researched at the current moment. Right now it’s understood that ketogenic diets are typically healthy to do while breastfeeding.
