So I’ve been obsessively scrolling through this sub every single day for 4 months and I find that people keep asking the same things over and over. So I thought, why not make a post addressing all these questions in one go. These are my thoughts only and I’m by no means an expert in keto. In gluconeogenesis, your blood sugar and insulin levels rise. This halts the production of ketones, which could then be used for energy. On keto, the goal is to simply eat enough protein to maintain muscle mass.
Combine water, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar in quart mason jar. Shake until gochujang paste is mixed evenly. Pour into saucepan and bring to a boil. The biggest thing for me is how keto fit with my food addiction. The hardest thing for me was coming to terms with the fact that my body NEEDED the thing I was addicted to. Those with diabetes should be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a rare but dangerous state for diabetics who don’t take enough insulin, get sick or hurt or aren’t drinking enough fluids. Other causes of ketoacidosis could include alcoholism, an overactive thyroid or true starvation. In ketoacidosis, ketones levels reach an extremely high level, causing the blood to become acidic.
A: The short answer is yes. Aside from the broad guidelines stated above, there are no real “rules” so long as you’re low carb, moderate protein and getting the rest of your calories from fat. If it fits within your macros, then you’re fine.
Pork on it’s own would never be fatty enough to be near ideal Keto macros, it’s also very clearly not a vegetable, something most of us don’t eat enough of. The nutritional landscape is changing. Ketogenic diet and low carb diet groups, as well as similar dietary groups like paleo, are growing and a nutritional revolution is beginning. We are starting to realize the detrimental effects of our relationship with excess sugar and carbs.
Also Consider: Certain foods can tend to be more conducive to constipation. Foods like eggs, cheese, and nuts may be contributing to constipation. Reduce intake of these at least during the initial phases of keto adaptation and see if that makes a difference. You want your stool to pass easily and resemble type 3 or 4 on the chart below.
This ratio is a good way to gauge if something is “keto friendly” or not. Of course there are exceptions, like most vegetables, but this ratio works for just about anything that comes in a package. If it isn’t delivering a whole lot of vitamins and minerals and it doesn’t fit this ratio, it’s probably not a part of a solid keto diet!
“If you’re using the keto diet for medical nutrition therapy, you definitely need medical oversight to be successful,” says Jadin. “Though anyone considering the keto diet would benefit from partnering with a medical professional, such as a dietitian, who is well-versed in this diet.”
Carbohydrates (carbs) are a macronutrient found in things like starches, grains and foods high in sugar. This includes, but isn’t limited to, bread, flour, rice, pasta, beans, potatoes, sugar, syrup, cereals, fruits, bagels and soda.
The ketone blood monitor is the most accurate ketosis testing method. A blood monitor measures your state of ketosis by detecting the amount of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in your blood, which is one of the primary ketones.(28)
An individual who wants to stay within 5-10% carbs from total calories would consume between 100 and 200 calories from carbs, which is 25 to 50 grams of carbs per day. Most people consume roughly 30 grams of carbohydrates on the keto diet. Depending upon your activity level, you might be able to consume 80 grams of carbs and remain in ketosis.
We’re also going to keep it simple here. Most of the time, it’ll be salad and meat, slathered in high fat dressings and calling it a day. We don’t want to get too rowdy here. You can use leftover meat from previous nights or use easy accessible canned chicken/fish. If you do use canned meats, try to read the labels and get the one that uses the least (or no) additives!
Coconut oil coffee probably sounds tasty, especially if you’re a coconut fan. But, you may be nervous to add things like butter, collagen and gelatin to your morning joe. Please don’t be scared. Collagen powder and gelatin are actually very neutral in their flavor profiles. Meanwhile, grass-fed butter adds a creamy richness that makes additional dairy like milk or cream unnecessary.
Variations on the Johns Hopkins protocol are common. The initiation can be performed using outpatient clinics rather than requiring a stay in hospital. Often there is no initial fast (fasting increases the risk of acidosis and hypoglycaemia and weight loss). Rather than increasing meal sizes over the three-day initiation, some institutions maintain meal size but alter the ketogenic ratio from 2:1 to 4:1.[9]
“The really dominant view is that the dietary guidelines are good…and the reason America is fat and sick is that America has failed to follow them,” Teicholz says. “That’s when you start looking at the data…By every food category you can find, we have faithfully, dutifully followed the guidelines.”

I’m desperate to find some answers~I have no history of sensitivity to anything, no allergies. I understand allergies can happen at any time. I started the Keto diet and in a one month time I had four separate episodes of my tongue swelling~each episode worse than the one before. I LOVED this diet~felt great, handled it with ease. The last episode almost put me in the hospital~my tongue was so swollen it was coming out of my mouth making it difficult to swollen and breath. I had no choice but to narrow it down to Ketosis. All the foods were the same that I have eaten all my life. No new meds. The last episode I took 2 Benadryl and pulled myself out of Ketosis with consuming a Dr.Pepper, and 2 pieces of white toast. I was terrified. Everyone on Facebook in all these Keto sites tell me it has nothing to do with Ketosis….but I’ve tried literally everything I consumed when a was on that WOE and I’ve had no reaction in days. My body feels horrible, I have no energy, my entire body aches. I want back on the Keto diet because my body was responding really well to it~except for my tongue.
This has been my entire breakfast, daily, for over a year. At one point I felt like I needed a little more, so I tried eating a hard boiled egg too. That didn’t really help, so I tried adding extra butter and coconut oil to the beverage and that did the trick – no egg or anything else needed. When I read this today, I ordered some of Dr. Axe’s bone broth collagen, though. I’m excited to try adding this in as I think it will up the nutrients and satiation as well. Maybe I’ll be able to cut back on the butter and oil a bit.
Exogenous ketones provide the body with extra ketones for energy. They help you get back into ketosis at any time, instead of having to wait at least a couple days. Exogenous ketones can also be taken in between meals to provide a quick punch of ketones or before a workout for additional energy.
