Fat is the cornerstone of the keto diet, making up the bulk of calories. An individual consuming 2,000 calories per day would need to consume 144 to 177 grams of fat. Fats make up 70-80% of your calories. Since fat is the main source of nutrition on a ketogenic diet, it’s important to source high-quality, healthy fats, which you’ll read about below.
The best type of vegetables for a ketogenic diet are both high in nutrients and low in carbohydrates. As most of you can guess, these are dark and leafy. Anything that resembles spinach or kale will fall into this category and will be the best vegetable to include into dishes/meals.
Thank you Dr Jockers! I recently came across your website and i absolutely love what you do. I am an advanced practice nurse and just started a part time keto coaching practice.I am already amazed by the changes i see in my clients. Do you have by chance a training program for keto coaches. If not, is there one out there that you recommend? Thank you in advance.
I was making my own bone broth and drinking a cup of it every day. I was also putting collagen in my Bullet Proof coffee AND I was putting gelatin in a smoothie every day. A little is good…too much can cause lots of problems! I had MAJOR brain fog. WHAT?!!!! That’s one of the reasons I was talking all of that. To heal the leaky gut so I wouldn’t have leaky brain! If you aren’t completely healthy (and WHO is, these days), I would warn people about too much of a good thing. https://selfhacked.com/blog/glutamate/ This might help. It was my Clinical Nutritionist who told me about what was going on with me and to cut back. My body can’t handle BOTH collagen & gelatin. It’s one or the other (per day) for me. Listen to your body ;o)
Many people find that during the beginning stages of a ketogenic diet they experience intense food cravings. These food cravings are typically for high-sugar foods and tend to really challenge your willpower.
How often you eat is also up to your personal preference. “For most people, I recommend three to four meals per day with a few healthy keto snacks in between,” says Dr. Axe. “This ensures that you’re getting a good mix of protein and fat all day long to keep you feeling energized and satisfied.” That being said, he encourages people to listen to their bodies and tune in to when they’re truly hungry. “If you find that you feel better eating five to six smaller meals spread throughout the day, do what works best for you.”
Grass-fed beef and other types of fatty cuts of meat, including lamb, goat, veal, venison and other game. Grass-fed, fatty meat is preferable because it’s higher in quality omega-3 fats — 0 grams net carbs per 5 ounces
There’s an underlying reason we don’t want to test ourselves. We might not get the answer we want. Pride and shame conspire to tell us we don’t need to check our results. The key is to not take yourself so seriously and just go for it. The two possible outcomes are
Before starting, ask yourself what is really realistic for you, Mattinson suggests. Then get your doctor’s okay. You may also work with a local registered dietitian nutritionist to limit potential nutrient deficiencies and talk about vitamin supplementation, as you won’t be eating whole grains, dairy, or fruit, and will eliminate many veggies. “A diet that eliminates entire food groups is a red flag to me. This isn’t something to take lightly or dive into headfirst with no medical supervision,” she says.
So you’ve decided you want to try out the high-fat, low-carb diet, better-known as the fat-burning ketogenic diet. Whether it’s to lose weight, have more energy, or fuel workouts differently, going keto is a popular choice right now. But figuring out a keto meal plan on your own is no easy feat, especially since eating a diet super high in fats doesn’t come naturally to many people who are accustomed to the traditionally carb-heavy American diet. (It’s especially hard if you’re vegan and want to try keto.) But this should help: Keto experts explain how to set yourself up for success, plus provide ideas for exactly what keto foods to eat when you’re first getting started. (While you’re at it, check out these Low-Carb Keto drinks That Will Keep You in Ketosis.)
Achieving optimal ketosis hinges on finding the right balance of macronutrients (or “macros” in keto-speak); these are the elements in your diet that account for the majority of your calories, a.k.a. energy—namely, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. By the way, it’s often “net grams” of carbohydrates that are counted toward your daily intake; “net” deducts the amount of fiber in a food from its carbohydrate total.

Leftovers will be another thing we will take into consideration. Not only is it easier on you, but why put yourself through the hassle to cook the same food more than once? Breakfast is something I normally do leftover style, where I don’t have to worry about it in the morning and I certainly don’t have to stress about it. Grab some food out the fridge, pre-made for me, and head out the door. It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?
Although there can be many different side effects that manifest while becoming keto-adapted, many of them stem from similar underlying issues. In this article, I outline what those underlying issues are, their related keto side effects, and simple strategies to overcome them so you can become keto-adapted as smoothly as possible.
Now, Week 1’s shopping list is going to be long. I have to make the assumption you have nothing in your house. Many of the items are common items that most people will have already. These are all staples in my everyday cooking for keto, and should be considered an investment for your health. Once you have all of the items from week 1, there won’t be too much else to buy.
Here’s a couple of our most popular YouTube videos that give an idea of how to start a ketogenic diet. We release new videos 3 times per week ranging from cooking, to grocery shopping, to taste testing new keto snacks.
While it’s grown in popularity in recent years, there are still many misconceptions on the diet, its health benefits and how it works. Below, you’ll learn what the ketogenic diet is, what you can and cannot eat, its various health benefits and objectives and which supplements can make your transition to keto easier.

Veggies that are slightly higher in carbs (but still low all things considered) include asparagus, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bell pepper, sugar snap peas, water chestnuts, radishes, jicama, green beans, wax beans, tomatoes — 3–7 grams net carbs per 1 cup raw
For most people this figure should be north of 70% of daily calories. A good way to approach things is to start by keeping carbs low, often under 20g per day. Next you want to make sure you’re hitting your protein goal. Once those 2 are covered you can fill in everything else with fat. The approach we like to recommend is to eat fat until you’re full, once the other 2 macros are met. At first you may be overeating calories, but overtime the low carb, high fat way of eating will auto correct that.
The biggest shifts in your daily habits will be how you food shop and how you cook, and recipes that are ketogenic need to be followed rather than just low-carb. You will require the healthy fats in order to get into ketosis and have enough energy without the carbs. And you will be considerably more energetic and healthier when cooking your own keto-friendly food rather than buying supposedly keto foods off the shelf. So visit my page on keto recipes as well as keto snacks (including fat bombs!), and get started on a ketogenic meal plan!
Hello fellow Keto-ers. I’ve been attempting to do Keto since January and each time I would only get so far. 3 days…7 days..9 days, but I would always fall off of the wagon on day 9! Not like I have a fixation on the number 9 but for some reason 9 days felt like 2 months to me.
We also see a lot more dessert recipes with the higher carb vegetables because of their natural sweetness. Ginger and pumpkin especially come to mind. If you’re in the mood for an autumn inspired treat, consider adding vegetables to your desserts. Some examples are:
Exogenous ketones provide the body with extra ketones for energy. They help you get back into ketosis at any time, instead of having to wait at least a couple days. Exogenous ketones can also be taken in between meals to provide a quick punch of ketones or before a workout for additional energy.
For example, say someone requires 2,000 calories per day and is eating 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. That would come out to 1,500 calories/167 grams of fat, 400 calories/100 grams of protein, and 100 calories/25 grams of carbs. This person would need to make sure they stay at or below 25 grams of carbs each day.
This includes, but is not limited to, desserts, artificial sweeteners, smoothies, soda and fruit juice. Even condiments are usually filled with sugar, so put down the ketchup and mayo. If you are craving a dessert, try one of the keto-friendly dessert recipes listed on this site instead.
Option 3: “Make your own keto ‘lunchable’ with cubes of grilled chicken, a slice of nitrate-free ham, cheese cubes, pickle slices, a hard-boiled egg, a few raw grape tomatoes, raw veggies like cauliflower or broccoli, a few almonds or walnuts, guacamole, and ranch dressing,” says Stefanski. Well this morning I got on the scale, and I’m officially 179.6! Yeah okay I’m still basically 180 but it was so exciting to finally get out of the 80s! I’m so happy and more committed to keep going! Keto is great.
Cravings are insanely hard to deal with, and I’m no exception by any means. But it made me think about all the other foods I love but choose not to eat now because I don’t want to feel like a bloated, walking pile of water trash every day anymore. Sugar is like a drug, right? Is it possible that all these foods: bread, pizza crust, chips, fries, pasta- don’t actually taste like anything and aren’t inherently delicious, but its the way our brains receive sugar that makes us think its our favorite? I think I probably answered my own question but it really blew me away. I wish there was a way to share how I feel with people who want to do keto, but end up quitting because they can’t let go of their favorite carbs. I feel like once I realized the truth about my “favorite” foods, it made sticking to keto so much easier.
And while we only store enough glucose for about 24 hours of energy, fat can be stored in the body to provide months worth of energy, which is why people can survive fasting (10). The amount of fat your body can utilize for energy will depend on your body composition and fat percentage.
This means that instead of generating tons of ketones from the very beginning, most people experience hypoglycemia for a period of time. With hypoglycemia comes a disruption in cortisol signaling which is what accounts for the HPA axis dysfunction. Finally, HPA axis dysfunction leads to an increase in secretion of minerals from the body in the urine.
Pork on it’s own would never be fatty enough to be near ideal Keto macros, it’s also very clearly not a vegetable, something most of us don’t eat enough of. So to make vegetables less boring and boost the fat quota of the meal I’ve made up a sensational cheese sauce. If you’re just getting started on Keto, this is a great one to kick it off with.
Everyone loves lettuce tacos. They’re very straightforward, nearly impossible to get wrong, and Keto friendly. I’m even happy to admit that I prefer them over regular tacos. But in spite of the pros of the humble lettuce taco, it still comes with the cons of a regular taco: being very messy. Lets fix that.
Vegetarians and vegans are used to eating more healthy grains and carbs than fat. We know vegetarians and vegans who struggled to give up and replace their usual meals of sandwiches, pastas and starchy vegetables.
In addition, this product is full of electrolytes that are needed for keto adaptation and branched chain amino acids to support fat burning and lean body tissue development. It also has a clinical dose of sunflower lecithin which supports bile flow and provides phospholipids for improved mental activity.
On the flip side, others—including some medical experts—believe a well-formulated keto diet is sustainable and meets essential nutrient needs; they also point to increasing research linking the diet to potential health benefits.
Healthy fats include saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and certain types of polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), especially omega-3 fatty acids. It’s best to include all types in your diet, with an emphasis on saturated fats, especially compared to PUFAs.
When you eat a diet rich in carbohydrates, your body converts those carbs into glucose. This causes an “insulin spike,” as insulin carries the glucose to your bloodstream for energy. Glucose is the preferred energy source of the body. When glucose is present, your body will burn it before burning fat.
The cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD) involves alternating days of strict keto and high-carb consumption. For example, a week on CKD would involve eating 20-50 grams of carbs for five consecutive days, then eating a high-carb diet (over 100 grams per day) for two days.
