For a long time, ketones were believed to be toxic. This is only because in a severe diabetes state when a person has run out of insulin, the body can generate a tremendous amount of ketones and dramatically increase its acidity. This is called ketoacidosis. However, this is rare and only occurs in a severe diabetic state and in diabetes type 1.2
This sub has been a huge inspiration for me (and although I don’t comment a lot, I’d say it’s instrumental in my success). Here are some things I learned, things that happened, and things I wish would happen.
Many people choose to eat salads as a way to get their greens in for the day. Salads are super quick to make, and you can put almost anything in them. Next time you’re not sure of what to make, get some inspiration from these:
You have already heard about the scale known as the glycemic index (GI), but you may never have heard of the insulin index. This scale rates all the non-carbohydrate triggers of insulin, and the big one is zero-fat protein. One example is in whey protein powder. 
While most other animal-based protein powders contain casein and whey, which can be inflammatory and hard to digest for some people, collagen protein from grass-fed beef is made low and slow to preserve the nutrition.
While the ketogenic diet has become popular for weight loss, studies have also shown numerous other health benefits of following a keto diet. It may help reverse Type 2 diabetes and reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, depression and autism (3)(4). The keto diet was first used in the 1920s not as a weight loss diet, but a natural treatment to prevent seizures in epilepsy patients (5).
But you don’t really need carbohydrates to thrive at all. You need nutrient-dense vegetables, yes. But the body does not require carbohydrates for health. As even conventional medicine practitioners will tell you, “there is no clear requirement for dietary carbohydrates for human adults.4,5

I love this recipe! I just tried it myself two days ago and was pretty surprised by the taste. I’ve been drinking butter coffee and tea for some time, but only recently have I started branching out and trying out some other recipes and ingredients.
On the other hand, the types of foods you’ll avoid eating on the keto, low-carb diet are likely the same ones you are, or previously were, accustomed to getting lots of your daily calories from before starting this way of eating. This includes items like fruit, processed foods or drinks high in sugar, those made with any grains or white/wheat flour, conventional dairy products, desserts, and many other high-carb foods (especially those that are sources of “empty calories”).
This is where the magic happens. Eating a high carb diet means you’re always producing insulin to transport the glucose around your body. The fat can just sit around and watch because insulin is doing all the work. The fat is eventually stored, which leads to weight gain.
“Once your body enters ketosis, you also begin to lose muscle, become extremely fatigued, and eventually enter starvation mode. Then it actually becomes even harder to lose weight,” Cimperman told Healthline.
It may happen in a month, but it’s more likely to take at least six weeks. But once you get there you won’t have sugar cravings anymore. You’ll have better blood sugar. Your memory will be sharper, and you’ll urinate less at night. You’ll also sleep better because your blood sugar won’t be plummeting during the night after sugar spikes.
Option 3: Grilled chicken served with eggplant, yellow squash, and zucchini along with a few tomatoes, sautéed with garlic in olive oil. Adding additional fats in the form of a sauce incorporating heavy cream or coconut cream is a smart choice for balancing macros.
Constipation is a key sign that you are not maintaining electrolyte/mineral balance during keto adaptation. The consistency of someone’s stool, and therefore the ability to pass that stool, is heavily influenced by its water content. The water content of your stool is likewise influenced by your overall hydration levels.
Nuts and seeds are fine. Macadamias and pecans are great fatty nuts. (But walnuts and macadamias can go rancid. Be careful.) Cashews are higher in carbohydrates, so avoid them. For nut butters, look on the label. You want sea salt and peanuts or almonds only. Make sure there’s no added food starch or MSG. MSG really spikes insulin.
With the keto diet showing up all over the news, in forums, magazines, and in conversations at the gym, there’s a lot of things being said that are true, but a lot of things that aren’t so true as well.

Even crazier is that the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends foods that equate to over 50 teaspoons of sugar per day. The American Heart Association, the USDA Food Pyramid, and the Obesity Society all recommend a similar eating plan: high carbs.

Everything else hits the pause button, including properly digesting your alcohol, including the carb-heavy meal you may have considered a solid base for drinking. When this happens, your body stores that excess energy of sugar and carbs as fat.

For patients who benefit, half achieve a seizure reduction within five days (if the diet starts with an initial fast of one to two days), three-quarters achieve a reduction within two weeks, and 90% achieve a reduction within 23 days. If the diet does not begin with a fast, the time for half of the patients to achieve an improvement is longer (two weeks) but the long-term seizure reduction rates are unaffected.[43] Parents are encouraged to persist with the diet for at least three months before any final consideration is made regarding efficacy.[9]
Bone broth collagen: Bone broth is a rich source of collagen that is now available in powdered form. Bone broth collagen is loaded with amino acids that help to support healthy gut function, improve skin appearance from the inside out, build muscle and improve joint health amongst other benefits. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, and it’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. Basically, I have this idea that the most natural diet we evolved for may be an annual cycle between ketosis part of the year, and “non-ketosis” (glucosis? I guess I’ll say NK because I’m not familiar with the vernacular if there is one). My favorite class in college was Evolutionary Psychology (I was a psychology major). After learning about ketosis and how it works, it seems really odd to me that we have these two opposing systems for fueling our bodies. I keep hearing claims about how ketosis is like, diet we evolved to eat, and it’s the best diet for humans, but I was puzzled as to why we even had this other system. And why does the one that burns fat make us less hungry, but the one that puts on fat make us hungrier? And why does the one that seems best set up to make fat, also prevent the burning and usage of it?
I’ve tried to get back on the horse three times and every time I would start cheating like a week in so weight would stop coming off. A few potato chips here and there would turn into eating anything I want at a restaurant that weekend. I just couldn’t stick with it. Of course like every 3-4 weeks there’s a holiday, birthday, or some reason to cheat.
Avoid unhealthy fats like seed oils and vegetable oils, which can become rancid when heated. Unhealthy fats and oils you should avoid on keto include canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil and grapeseed oil. Also avoid reduced-fat or grain-fed dairy products, as they can have added carbs and sugar.
I use an immersion blender. I used to use my vitamix, but it was too much hassle and clean up. The immersion blender works great and is easier to clean up. It comes out nice and creamy. In fact, sometimes in the vitamix the oils didn’t quite blend all the way. I haven’t had that problem since switching to immersion.
Why do you want to start a ketogenic diet? Do you want to finally lose the stubborn excess body weight you’ve been lugging around? Are you looking for better mental clarity and more energy? Or will you be using a ketogenic diet to lower your blood sugar and cholesterol levels and find better overall health?
Can ketone production in the body get too high? Yes, it’s called ketoacidosis. Is it likely under normal circumstances? Not at all. For most people, it’s a challenge just to get into optimal ranges for ketosis. Getting into territory where you need medical intervention is just not likely.
As a general rule of thumb, the sweeter the vegetable is – the more sugar it has in it. You have to be very careful with the amount you consume from things such as carrots, onions, and squash. You can easily see the difference in carb counts between the above and below ground vegetables above. Of course, you can eat these in moderation, but you need to watch your intake.
As your body adjusts to fat burning, you will need more B vitamins. More specifically, you need lots of Vitamin B5 to avoid fatigue and help your adrenals and metabolism. Sodium deficiency could also lead to fatigue and weakness. I recommend taking nutritional yeast.

This ratio is a good way to gauge if something is “keto friendly” or not. Of course there are exceptions, like most vegetables, but this ratio works for just about anything that comes in a package. If it isn’t delivering a whole lot of vitamins and minerals and it doesn’t fit this ratio, it’s probably not a part of a solid keto diet!
The fattiest nuts and seeds, like almonds, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds, also happen to be the ones that contain the most magnesium. So eat them heartily, but don’t to be afraid to supplement here as well.
During keto-adaptation, your body is learning to utilize a completely new fuel source that it has not had to use before. The muscles (along with the brain) contain tons of mitochondria for energy production that must now learn to utilize ketones as an energy source.
You won’t feel full, and you’ll be more likely to overeat unhealthy foods since your inhibitions are lowered. This can make your stomach seem like a bottomless pit, scrounging for more calories as soon as you finish your first drink.
Typically, this is caused by the liver dumping something. This happens because you’re losing lots of fat, and toxins are stored in your fat. As they come out of the system, these toxins can cause a rash. The solution? Consume more vegetables. Also, try bentonite clay. This clay attracts toxins by pulling them toward itself, and it is excreted through the stool. 
When you’re eating the foods that get you there (more on that in a minute), your body can enter a state of ketosis in one to three days, she adds. During the diet, the majority of calories you consume come from fat, with a little protein and very little carbohydrates. Ketosis also happens if you eat a very low-calorie diet — think doctor-supervised, only when medically recommended diets of 600 to 800 total calories.
If you’ve recently adopted the keto diet, you may be feeling a variety of side effects including nausea, dizziness, constipation, headaches and irritability. This is your body’s natural reaction to removing carbs from your diet, and we promise the symptoms are temporary. Also known as keto flu, it’s a natural reaction that occurs when your body switches from burning glucose as energy to burning fat.
VITAMIN K2, is another interesting but not commonly discussed fat-soluble vitamin. It is crucial to keep calcium out of the soft tissues (arteries and joints) and in your bones. Vitamin K2 comes from grass-fed dairy, cheese, egg yolk and grass-fed liver. 
So for your first month or so, be restrained but not necessarily strict. If BCAAs help you train and recover, drink them during your training, but don’t guzzle them all day. And if you have any doubts about whether they’re affecting your ketone levels, your test sticks should tell you.

Some people believe that eating keto is more expensive but this isn’t true. Initially, you might find yourself needing to restock the pantry with keto-friendly items but beyond that, eating keto isn’t more expensive than eating normally.
“Plenty of people jump right in, thinking all they have to do is cut carbs and increase fat. All of a sudden, they hit a wall and get ‘keto flu.’ They feel tired, lethargic, and experience headaches,” Wittrock says. “The primary reason they get these symptoms is lack of the three primary electrolytes: sodium, potassium, and magnesium. If you are deficient in any of these, you will suffer mentally and physically. This is the single biggest reason people fail on the keto diet.”
