To start a keto diet, you will want to plan ahead. That means having a viable diet plan ready and waiting. What you eat depends on how fast you want to get into a ketogenic state. The more restrictive you are on your carbohydrates (less than 15g per day), the faster you will enter ketosis.
Everything else hits the pause button, including properly digesting your alcohol, including the carb-heavy meal you may have considered a solid base for drinking. When this happens, your body stores that excess energy of sugar and carbs as fat.
Those on a ketogenic diet also report experiencing harsher hangovers compared to when they ate a high carb diet. While there aren’t definitive studies proving why this happens, dehydration and an imbalance of electrolytes seem to play a part. Both dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can occur when you drink alcohol and when you’re in ketosis, creating the perfect storm for intense hangovers.
I have struggled with weight all of my adult life. It started when I hit puberty, just a few extra pounds that I could never lose, and after failing every diet over the last 35+ years those few extra pounds are now close to 200. I was diagnosed in my mid-30s with Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism. In my early 40s with PCOS. In May of this year I was told I am showing signs of insulin resistance. I worried because my mother was diabetic. I already have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides. To add to the joy all my life I’ve also struggled with depression and anxiety.

A review of multiple studies in the journal Nutrients found that ketogenic diets are connected to significant reductions in total cholesterol, increases in “good” HDL cholesterol levels, dips in triglycerides levels and decreases in “bad” LDL cholesterol; there are questions as to whether diets high in saturated fat negate these benefits. The same paper reports that a ketogenic may slightly reduce blood pressure, but science is still very scant on this point.
However, I would prefer that you do not count calories. Remember that the purpose of food is to supply all your nutrients and not to balance calories. Instead, let me show you in picture form the amounts of foods it will take for you to get these percentages. 
5) Don’t rely on eating super-rich foods to hit your macro ratios. There’s a temptation with keto to say “oh look i can eat a scoop of cream cheese and some bacon and my macros are perfect.” In my case that just makes me feel sick because you simply aren’t getting enough nutrition. You really gotta make sure a large proportion of calories are coming from veggies. In my case I start most days with egg and avocado, have a salad for lunch (with some kind of protein on top), then enjoy roast veggies with dinner. That usually works out pretty well and is very filling. Stir-fry type recipes are also good for this, as are things like huevos rancheros or mini breakfast quiches where you mix in loads of spinach
If you stumble on a recipe without a macro count, you can enter the ingredients into a diet app like KetoDietApp or MyFitnessPal to get the macros and calorie count of any meal sans complicated math equation.
As a general rule of thumb, the sweeter the vegetable is – the more sugar it has in it. You have to be very careful with the amount you consume from things such as carrots, onions, and squash. You can easily see the difference in carb counts between the above and below ground vegetables above. Of course, you can eat these in moderation, but you need to watch your intake.
It’s no surprise that spinach is one of the most eaten leafy green vegetables on a ketogenic diet. Spinach has only 3g net carbs per cooked cup of spinach, and almost no digestible carbs raw. This veggie is a great way to bulk up lunches with salads You can make high-fat side dishes like creamed spinach to go along with any meal, too!

If you’re eating five times a day, you’re using up your bile reserves like crazy.

This has been my entire breakfast, daily, for over a year. At one point I felt like I needed a little more, so I tried eating a hard boiled egg too. That didn’t really help, so I tried adding extra butter and coconut oil to the beverage and that did the trick – no egg or anything else needed. When I read this today, I ordered some of Dr. Axe’s bone broth collagen, though. I’m excited to try adding this in as I think it will up the nutrients and satiation as well. Maybe I’ll be able to cut back on the butter and oil a bit.
When you consume lots of sugar and have higher levels of insulin on a continuing basis, your cells try to protect you and eventually start resisting or ignoring insulin. Remember, insulin is the key that allows glucose into the cell. So, your cells prevent insulin from working in order to prevent excessive sugar in the cell. This is your body saying, “If you’re going to keep eating sugar, I will block it at the cellular level.”
Keto flu is a very common experience for new ketoers, but it often goes away after just a few days – and there are ways to minimize or even eliminate it. When transitioning to keto, you may feel some slight discomfort including fatigue, headache, nausea, cramps, etc.
A: First you have to find out whether you’re constipated or just not shitting as much. If you’re constipated as in you feel like you need to go but you can’t and it’s painful, some fibre supplements may help. Otherwise, if you don’t feel the need to go, you just don’t need to go lol. Since you’re eating nutrient-dense food there is probably less waste to be excreted. This is also the case if you’re eating much less food than before. Don’t worry about it unless it’s causing discomfort.
thank you Dr. Jockers for the informative article. I have hypothyroidism from 3 parathyroid cysts being removed along with 80% of my thyroid. It is under control with Levothyroxine and liathyronine. I have been on the keto diet for almost 4 weeks and am still experiencing heart palpatations, dizzyness and low energy. I have been quite strict and feel disappointed. I have Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and my oncologist was ok with me going on it. I feel like this diet would help me have more energy and help my overall health. Any advise would be appreciated. thank you, Inika
