But now, I just treat carbs as my drug. Obviously it’s damn near impossible to just have 0 carbs every day, but keeping it under 20g allows me to basically be carb abstinent. It allows me the freedom to eat other foods without feeling guilty or scared. I hate to be hyperbolic, but I really believed that keto may have saved my life. I was heading in a really bad direction and now I can’t see myself ever going in a different one.

Dorma, u are lactose intolerant cuz im sure u are not taking raw milk, raw butter, etc. If u take them pasteurized, the digestive enzymes that come naturally with milk, are killed so thats why people cannot tolerate milk, cuz the enzymes that God created are not there to digest it.

We really want to drive home this point. Keeping your fat intake high makes everything easier. It contributes to your energy levels, keeps you satiated, and helps automatically correct a lot of bad eating habits you might have picked up over the years.

By default, your body generates energy from carbohydrates (glucose), which are stored as glycogen in your muscle tissue and liver (6). You store enough carbs for approximately 24 hours worth of energy (7). Most of us easily replenish our carb stores by eating fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes, so our carb “fuel tanks” rarely get low and we continue burning glucose for energy.
A systematic review in 2016 found and analysed seven randomized controlled trials of ketogenic diet in children and young people with epilepsy.[2] The trials were done among children and young people for whom drugs failed to control their seizures, and only one of the trials compared a group assigned to ketogenic diet with a group not assigned to one.[16] The other trials compared types of diets or ways of introducing them to make them more tolerable.[2] Nearly 40% of the children and young people had half or fewer seizures with the diet compared with the group not assigned to the diet. Only about 10% were still on the diet after a few years.[2] Adverse effects such as hunger and loss of energy in that trial were common, with about 30% experiencing constipation.[16]
In the mid-1990s, Hollywood producer Jim Abrahams, whose son’s severe epilepsy was effectively controlled by the diet, created the Charlie Foundation to promote it. Publicity included an appearance on NBC’s Dateline programme and …First Do No Harm (1997), a made-for-television film starring Meryl Streep. The foundation sponsored a multicentre research study, the results of which—announced in 1996—marked the beginning of renewed scientific interest in the diet.[1]

Unfortunately, on the ketogenic diet you can’t eat whatever you want. However, unlike many other diets, once you find yourself in ketosis your cravings for the things you can’t eat usually disappear and if they don’t?
I am beside myself. I’m at the point that I’m afraid to eat anything. It goes right through me!! I’ve had liquid diarrhea for 3 weeks now and don’t know what to do. I’m up through the night and it’s really messing with my sleep. I have breast cancer and I really need to do this diet. I’m very worried. I was making my own bone broth and drinking a cup of it every day. I was also putting collagen in my Bullet Proof coffee AND I was putting gelatin in a smoothie every day. A little is good…too much can cause lots of problems! I had MAJOR brain fog. WHAT?!!!! That’s one of the reasons I was talking all of that. To heal the leaky gut so I wouldn’t have leaky brain! To decrease calories, you will have to think about what you need. Most likely, you will need less protein as well. So, keep in mind the portions of sizes of meals. Decrease them as you need to, or see fit.
For breakfast, you want to do something that’s quick, easy, tasty, and of course – gives you leftovers. I suggest starting day 1 on a weekend. This way, you can make something that will last you for the entire week. The first week is all about simplicity. Nobody wants to be making breakfast before work, and we’re not going to be doing that either!
Fungi is a great way to add some flavor into otherwise boring dishes. For example, in our mushroom cauliflower risotto, the baby bellas add a great texture and flavor. They’re extremely low-carb too, at only 1g net carb (white mushrooms) per cup.
You can measure if you’re in ketosis via urine or blood strips, though it’s not really worth it. The urine strips are considered pretty inaccurate (they more answer the question “Am I in ketosis?”), and the blood strips are expensive (up to $5 per strip). For most people this figure should be north of 70% of daily calories. A good way to approach things is to start by keeping carbs low, often under 20g per day. Next you want to make sure you’re hitting your protein goal. Once those 2 are covered you can fill in everything else with fat. The approach we like to recommend is to eat fat until you’re full, once the other 2 macros are met. At first you may be overeating calories, but overtime the low carb, high fat way of eating will auto correct that.
Now, if you’re the kind of person that can’t fast then you can go back and follow week 2 again. That’s no big deal. Though fasting does take some time for the body to get used to, so I suggest putting your best efforts into it. Not only are the health benefits fantastic, the self-control that you gain from doing so is really a great thing.
We, at Okanagan Rawsome have been fans of our Super (delicious) green Coffee for the past year. freshly brewed organic coffee, freshly made almond milk or organic raw whole milk ( from our neighbours) raw cacao nibs, spinach, kale or cilantro, tumeric, maca, cayenne, and a scoop of coconut oil or butter. At your suggestion we’ve recently added collagen powder. Blend until frothy and than go for a 10 km nordic ski! Don’t worry too much about exact measurements. You will know when you’ve overdone it on the greens or the cayenne!
In more moderate amounts, foods that are high in protein but low- or no-carb, including grass-fed meat, pasture-raised poultry, cage-free eggs, bone broth, wild-caught fish, organ meats and some full-fat (ideally raw) dairy products.
“For sodium, I recommend salting your food, eating salty snacks, and using chicken broth,” Wittrock says. “Increasing sodium is hard for people to grasp, because they associate sodium intake with water retention and fat loss. But replacing your lost sodium is critical, especially when you’re working out.”
There are three instances where there’s research to back up a ketogenic diet, including to help control type 2 diabetes, as part of epilepsy treatment, or for weight loss, says Mattinson. “In terms of diabetes, there is some promising research showing that the ketogenic diet may improve glycemic control. It may cause a reduction in A1C — a key test for diabetes that measures a person’s average blood sugar control over two to three months — something that may help you reduce medication use,” she says.
In 1921, Rollin Woodyatt reviewed the research on diet and diabetes. He reported that three water-soluble compounds, β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone (known collectively as ketone bodies), were produced by the liver in otherwise healthy people when they were starved or if they consumed a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. Russel Wilder, at the Mayo Clinic, built on this research and coined the term ketogenic diet to describe a diet that produced a high level of ketone bodies in the blood (ketonemia) through an excess of fat and lack of carbohydrate. Wilder hoped to obtain the benefits of fasting in a dietary therapy that could be maintained indefinitely. His trial on a few epilepsy patients in 1921 was the first use of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for epilepsy.[10]
I use my vitamix. I tried using my magic bullet but it’s been leaking with hot coffee and sprays all over the place. My vitamix was made for hot liquids so I just use that even though it’s much larger than the magic bullet.

To review briefly, hypoglycemia stimulates the release of cortisol. Cortisol signals the release of stored glucose in the body, called glycogen, from the liver and muscle tissue. Cortisol is a stimulating hormone that can disrupt sleep if this response happens at night. This results in either insomnia or very poor quality sleep.
I use a 3-4 cup frothing pitcher and preheat it along with my ceramic pour-over…preheat everything. Then i have a Bamix immersion blender…works so much better than ordinary immersion blenders. My coffee, butter and and MCT oil are all in the pitcher and the im-blender blends it all so beautifully with a sooth foamy top. Just delicious!
Use High Quality Salt:  Use a high-quality salt in generous amounts in all of your meals, This will add back in sodium and other trace minerals that are excreted more rapidly during keto-adaptation. I like either Himalayan pink or a Celtic (gray) sea salt as they are the highest in trace minerals.

Now you are aware of the physiological changes that contribute to frequent urination, constipation, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and heart palpitations. Fortunately, the strategies to mitigate these side effects are quite simple. With a little proactivity and planning, these keto side effects will likely be less of an issue.
The original therapeutic diet for paediatric epilepsy provides just enough protein for body growth and repair, and sufficient calories[Note 1] to maintain the correct weight for age and height. The classic therapeutic ketogenic diet was developed for treatment of paediatric epilepsy in the 1920s and was widely used into the next decade, but its popularity waned with the introduction of effective anticonvulsant medications. This classic ketogenic diet contains a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to combined protein and carbohydrate. This is achieved by excluding high-carbohydrate foods such as starchy fruits and vegetables, bread, pasta, grains and sugar, while increasing the consumption of foods high in fat such as nuts, cream, and butter.[1] Most dietary fat is made of molecules called long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). However, medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)—made from fatty acids with shorter carbon chains than LCTs—are more ketogenic. A variant of the classic diet known as the MCT ketogenic diet uses a form of coconut oil, which is rich in MCTs, to provide around half the calories. As less overall fat is needed in this variant of the diet, a greater proportion of carbohydrate and protein can be consumed, allowing a greater variety of food choices.[4][5]

I really like this made with matcha green tea in the morning. It took me a few months to grow to like it as much as my morning coffee, but now I look forward to it each morning. I think there are lots of nutrient benefits to matcha green tea, but not the same ones as with the coffee. I guess it depends on what you’re going for. I did make buttered tea a couple times with an herbal tea in the afternoon when I wanted to eat everything in sight. The fat in it totally worked to stop my cravings, but it just doesn’t taste that great with herbal tea. I would only do that when I’m desperate.
