Keto naturally lowers blood sugar levels due to the type of foods you eat. Studies even show that the ketogenic diet is a more effective way to manage and prevent diabetes compared to low-calorie diets.
Avoid unhealthy fats like seed oils and vegetable oils, which can become rancid when heated. Unhealthy fats and oils you should avoid on keto include canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil and grapeseed oil. Also avoid reduced-fat or grain-fed dairy products, as they can have added carbs and sugar.
Normal dietary fat contains mostly long-chain triglycerides (LCT). Medium-chain triglycerides are more ketogenic than LCTs because they generate more ketones per unit of energy when metabolised. Their use allows for a diet with a lower proportion of fat and a greater proportion of protein and carbohydrate, leading to more food choices and larger portion sizes. The original MCT diet developed by Peter Huttenlocher in the 1970s derived 60% of its calories from MCT oil. Consuming that quantity of MCT oil caused abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting in some children. A figure of 45% is regarded as a balance between achieving good ketosis and minimising gastrointestinal complaints. The classical and modified MCT ketogenic diets are equally effective and differences in tolerability are not statistically significant. The MCT diet is less popular in the United States; MCT oil is more expensive than other dietary fats and is not covered by insurance companies.

You could try incorporating a low-carb, high-fat diet while using a high quality MCT oil to assist with ketone production but if you feel very sluggish for longer than a week you should use more carbs from low glycemic sources along with strategies to support the adrenals and balance blood sugar.

Physicians of ancient Greece treated diseases, including epilepsy, by altering their patients’ diet. An early treatise in the Hippocratic Corpus, On the Sacred Disease, covers the disease; it dates from c. 400 BC. Epilepsy is considered refractory (not yielding to treatment) when two or three anticonvulsant drugs have failed to control it. About 60% of patients will achieve control of their epilepsy with the first drug they use, whereas about 30% do not achieve control with drugs. When drugs fail, other options include epilepsy surgery, vagus nerve stimulation and the ketogenic diet.

On the ketogenic diet, carbohydrates are restricted and so cannot provide for all the metabolic needs of the body. Instead, fatty acids are used as the major source of fuel. These are used through fatty-acid oxidation in the cell’s mitochondria (the energy-producing parts of the cell). Humans can convert some amino acids into glucose by a process called gluconeogenesis, but cannot do this by using fatty acids. Since amino acids are needed to make proteins, which are essential for growth and repair of body tissues, these cannot be used only to produce glucose. This could pose a problem for the brain, since it is normally fuelled solely by glucose, and most fatty acids do not cross the blood–brain barrier. However, the liver can use long-chain fatty acids to synthesise the three ketone bodies β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone. These ketone bodies enter the brain and partially substitute for blood glucose as a source of energy.

This ensures that your body can burn the fat off your body instead of the fat you consume. Your body enters ketosis when you cut out something (carbs), not when you add something (fat). Also, fat is very calorie dense and since I’m a short woman on 1200kcals a day, I wouldn’t be able to eat much else if I get too many calories from fat.

You’re transitioning. Your body is equipped to process a high intake of carbs and a lower intake of fat. Your body needs to create enzymes to be able to do this. In the transitional period, the brain may run low on energy which can lead to grogginess, nausea, and headaches. If you’re having a large problem with this, you can choose to reduce carb intake gradually.

I have found that using this Brain Calm Magnesium throughout the day to be of tremendous help during keto-adaptation. I would recommend using 1 scoop in water 1-3 times per day depending on how your body is responding.
I use my vitamix. I tried using my magic bullet but it’s been leaking with hot coffee and sprays all over the place. My vitamix was made for hot liquids so I just use that even though it’s much larger than the magic bullet.
Firstly, two weeks is not a stall. Second, most of the weight you lost on your first week is water and your losses should slow down after that. Weight loss is not linear and there are times when you just maintain or even gain. As long as you are doing everything right, the weight will come off sooner or later. If you’re still not losing, double check what you’re doing. Have you recalculated your macros and calories since you last lost weight? Are you tracking everything (including the tbsp of oil or 5 extra almonds)? Are there any hidden carbs you didn’t take into account (spices, onions, garlic etc)? Some people stall on things like dairy and artificial sweeteners so try cutting them out and see if anything changes.
