Here’s a short list of foods that are keto-friendly: Avocados, animal fats, oils, animal protein (including seafood), mayonnaise, plant-based oils, leafy greens, cheese, full-fat dairy, butter and eggs.
High Blood Pressure: When drastically decreasing carbohydrate consumption, blood pressure may drop naturally. You may want to discuss this with your prescribing physician before implementing a ketogenic diet and take steps to monitor your body’s response to the change in diet.
Use Organic Broths: Sipping on broths throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated while also getting additional minerals and amino acids into your system. Try a good organic, free-range or pasture-raised chicken or beef broth. This can be a traditional broth or even bone broth.
So I’ve been obsessively scrolling through this sub every single day for 4 months and I find that people keep asking the same things over and over. So I thought, why not make a post addressing all these questions in one go. These are my thoughts only and I’m by no means an expert in keto. You’ve likely heard horror stories of what competitors feel like when they cut carbs low, or when the average bro talks about going keto. However, the odds are that those people were not actually in nutritional ketosis, or more importantly, following a well-formulated ketogenic diet. You can also try practicing the “one drink max” rule. Limit yourself to one drink per sitting and one to three drinks per week. Once you’ve reached your goal weight, or you’ve been able to reach and maintain ketosis, you can imbibe a bit more to find what works for you.
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fueling brain-function. However, if there is little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures. Almost half of children, and young people, with epilepsy who have tried some form of this diet saw the number of seizures drop by at least half, and the effect persists even after discontinuing the diet. There is some evidence that adults with epilepsy may benefit from the diet, and that a less strict regimen, such as a modified Atkins diet, is similarly effective. The most common adverse effect is constipation, affecting about 30% of patients—this was due to fluid restriction, which was once a feature of the diet, but this led to increased risk of kidney stones and is no longer considered beneficial.
During this time, you will likely feel a significant drop in strength and ability to exert physical energy. Luckily, once you become adapted you should see drastic improvements in these areas that are even greater than when you were sugar-adapted!
You may experience rapid weight loss in the first week due to fluid loss, but then after a few weeks, you’ll likely notice more pounds peeling away. Many reasons for this weight loss are being investigated, but the journal Obesity Reviews, reveals that ketosis suppresses your appetite, which squashes the desire to eat.
Although a standard ketogenic diet is even more restrictive in terms of carb intake, a “moderate keto diet” is another option that will very likely still be able to provide substantial weight loss results and other improvements in symptoms. Including slightly more carbs can be very useful for maintenance, allow for more flexibility, provide a higher fiber intake, and overall may feel more sustainable long term socially and psychologically.

You might be asking, “What’s a net carb?” It’s simple really! The net carbs are your total dietary carbohydrates, minus the total fiber. I recommend keeping total carbs below 35g and net carbs below 25g (ideally, below 20g).

You’re transitioning. Your body is equipped to process a high intake of carbs and a lower intake of fat. Your body needs to create enzymes to be able to do this. In the transitional period, the brain may run low on energy which can lead to grogginess, nausea, and headaches. If you’re having a large problem with this, you can choose to reduce carb intake gradually.
If you want to slam a protein shake post-workout, that’s probably fine as long as you’ve got room for it in your macros. But shoot for one that is very low—like, zero—in carbohydrates. If you struggle to fit fat in during the day, toss a tablespoon of olive oil in with your shake. You won’t taste it, and it gives a quick 13-14 grams of fat.

You could try incorporating a low-carb, high-fat diet while using a high quality MCT oil to assist with ketone production but if you feel very sluggish for longer than a week you should use more carbs from low glycemic sources along with strategies to support the adrenals and balance blood sugar.

To know you’re spot-on dietwise (since the macros mix that launch you into ketosis varies between individuals), you can measure ketones in your blood (with a finger prick kit) or more commonly, through your urine (cheaper, but not as accurate).
Lots and lots of food with dessert to cover the bases! Dinner is a fantastic time for me. I suggest breaking your fast with a small snack, then after 30-45 minutes eat to your hearts content. Normally I need 2 meals to get to my macros, and I think you’ll need to do the same.
Studies show that aerobic endurance is not decreased with a ketogenic diet[*]. However, athletes who switch to keto might experience limitations in performance at the beginning. This is simply the body adjusting to using fat as its preferred energy source.
But now, I just treat carbs as my drug. Obviously it’s damn near impossible to just have 0 carbs every day, but keeping it under 20g allows me to basically be carb abstinent. It allows me the freedom to eat other foods without feeling guilty or scared. I hate to be hyperbolic, but I really believed that keto may have saved my life. I was heading in a really bad direction and now I can’t see myself ever going in a different one.
Most people on the keto diet need to bump up their daily salt intake by an extra gram or two to avoid side effects like headaches, dizziness and even fainting, says Volek. Have you tried ghee? Most people who can’t do dairy CAN do ghee. But if you can’t do ghee, then coconut butter or raw cacao butter will work. Our brain is mostly fat. Our bodies work more efficiently when we are eating lots of healthy fats (and lower carb). I hope that helps.

Protein intake should be between one and 1.5 grams per kilogram of your ideal body weight. To convert pounds to kilograms, divide your ideal weight by 2.2. For example, a woman who weighs 150 pounds (68 kilograms) should get about 68–102 grams of protein daily.

Below is a list of what we consider the “best of the best” when it comes to vegetables. They’re both low in carbs and very high in micronutrients. Make sure that you frequently include the listed vegetables below in your daily meals.
Hydrating and Mineral Rich Foods: Consume plenty of hydrating, mineral-rich foods and use salt generously. I like to snack on celery, cucumbers, and especially seaweed in the form of these Sea Snax. These are like seaweed chips that taste great and contains a lot of beneficial minerals.
“In the beginning, I was terribly worried that I would lose muscle mass because of the low protein intake,” he says. “But, I lost absolutely no muscle and was able to add lean mass to my physique. For example, say someone requires 2,000 calories per day and is eating 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. That would come out to 1,500 calories/167 grams of fat, 400 calories/100 grams of protein, and 100 calories/25 grams of carbs. This person would need to make sure they stay at or below 25 grams of carbs each day.

Wouldn’t we be better served to take the few minutes to learn about what’s available, and then make a plan? Yes, we would take the time to Yelp or ask a friend for some knowledge and use that information to decide where we want to go.
The easiest macro to calculate in the ketogenic diet is fat. Once you’ve got your carbs and protein set, simply fill the rest of your daily calorie needs with fat sources. If you find yourself wanting to gain a bit of weight, add approximately 500 calories, or 55 grams. If you want to lose weight, cut down on your fat intake by 200-500 calories, or 22-55 grams.
