Then a close friend of mine told me about keto. It made a ton of sense to me, so I gave it a shot. I didn’t have a lot of confidence though. One year later, I’m down to 270, feeling incredible, and still going. And I haven’t even been able to exercise hardly at all because of arthritis problems. But the most important thing for me is that I honestly haven’t been trying to lose weight. I haven’t been stepping on the scale all the time and living or dying by those numbers. I’ve been keeping myself in ketosis and trusting the process and it has paid off.
Although there can be many different side effects that manifest while becoming keto-adapted, many of them stem from similar underlying issues. In this article, I outline what those underlying issues are, their related keto side effects, and simple strategies to overcome them so you can become keto-adapted as smoothly as possible.
In 1921, Rollin Woodyatt reviewed the research on diet and diabetes. He reported that three water-soluble compounds, β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone (known collectively as ketone bodies), were produced by the liver in otherwise healthy people when they were starved or if they consumed a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. Russel Wilder, at the Mayo Clinic, built on this research and coined the term ketogenic diet to describe a diet that produced a high level of ketone bodies in the blood (ketonemia) through an excess of fat and lack of carbohydrate. Wilder hoped to obtain the benefits of fasting in a dietary therapy that could be maintained indefinitely. His trial on a few epilepsy patients in 1921 was the first use of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for epilepsy.

I use an immersion blender. I used to use my vitamix, but it was too much hassle and clean up. The immersion blender works great and is easier to clean up. It comes out nice and creamy. In fact, sometimes in the vitamix the oils didn’t quite blend all the way. I haven’t had that problem since switching to immersion.
A short-lived increase in seizure frequency may occur during illness or if ketone levels fluctuate. The diet may be modified if seizure frequency remains high, or the child is losing weight. Loss of seizure-control may come from unexpected sources. Even “sugar-free” food can contain carbohydrates such as maltodextrin, sorbitol, starch and fructose. Today is my third Wednesday on Keto (been weighing in on Wednesdays) and I finally broke out of the 90s weight. I started keto at 200lbs and weighed 189 this morning. I haven’t started working out yet so this is entirely just on keto diet. It’s the little milestones that keep me going!
Hello fellow Keto-ers. I’ve been attempting to do Keto since January and each time I would only get so far. 3 days…7 days..9 days, but I would always fall off of the wagon on day 9! Not like I have a fixation on the number 9 but for some reason 9 days felt like 2 months to me.

The same day I felt like I could see clearer without my glasses. I tried to stay two days without my spectacles and it felt normal. It felt too good to be true. So, today I went to the optometrist and lo and behold, my power came down to negligible numbers. R: 75 and L: 25. Which means I DON’T NEED GLASSES ANYMORE. Medically certified glasses free. I was literally jumping with joy, much to the amusement of the saleswoman. I celebrated this unexpected, almost surreal occasion with buying myself new sunglasses. That too right off the shelf, without additional prescription lens (a first for me in adulthood). I researched about it and it seems quite a few people have had their vision improved thanks to low carb diets.
Your body is used to the simple routine of breaking down carbohydrates and using them as energy. Over time the body has built up an arsenal of enzymes ready for this process and only has a few enzymes for dealing with fats – mostly to store them.
On a side note, frozen vegetables are usually cheaper than fresh vegetables. If you buy greens in bulk but throw them out often, consider buying frozen. Surprisingly, frozen vegetables are sometimes more nutritious to their fresh counterpart – farms typically freeze greens at peak ripeness, ensuring nutrient density. You may have to cook excess water out occasionally, but it normally isn’t a problem in the final dish.
Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy low-carb diet, but sometimes we’re stuck with decisions we might regret later. Some vegetables are high in sugar and don’t cut it nutritionally – so we need to weed them out. Make sure to be careful when eating vegetables as their carb counts do add up quickly.
