One thing many people love about keto diet meal plans is that tracking your food is optional. “One of the biggest benefits of the ketogenic diet is that there’s no need to meticulously track your calories like you may in other diets,” notes Dr. Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S., D.C., founder of DrAxe.com, best-selling author of Eat Dirt, and cofounder of Ancient Nutrition. “Because you’re filling up on fat and protein, you’re more likely to feel satisfied and energized all day long, which causes you to naturally eat less.” This isn’t to say that food tracking on keto is discouraged. “Some people may find calorie counting a useful tool to be more mindful and aware of what they’re eating, but it’s not necessary on the ketogenic diet,” says Dr. Axe, but there’s no need to get too stressed about hitting a certain caloric goal, especially if you’re not trying to lose weight. Instead, research shows that low-fat diets high in refined sugar and carbs are far more destructive to the heart and arteries than fat, and have a greater ability to raise blood pressure and cause inflammation (12).
Then a close friend of mine told me about keto. It made a ton of sense to me, so I gave it a shot. I didn’t have a lot of confidence though. One year later, I’m down to 270, feeling incredible, and still going. And I haven’t even been able to exercise hardly at all because of arthritis problems. But the most important thing for me is that I honestly haven’t been trying to lose weight. I haven’t been stepping on the scale all the time and living or dying by those numbers. I’ve been keeping myself in ketosis and trusting the process and it has paid off.
While the ketogenic diet can be therapeutic for individuals with certain conditions, precautions need to be taken to prevent any severe keto side effects. If you are medications to control your condition, this is especially important.
We really want to drive home this point. Keeping your fat intake high makes everything easier. It contributes to your energy levels, keeps you satiated, and helps automatically correct a lot of bad eating habits you might have picked up over the years.

NOTE: The main exception to ketoacidosis is type 1 diabetics – it can happen when insulin levels are severely low which is rare in someone with a normally functioning pancreas. Dangerously high ketone levels result in insulin secretion.
Thanks Dr. Jockers…very informative article. Im into pure keto diet almost a week now but started illiminating sugar and carbs 3weeks ago and the side effects that i’ve encountered are frequently urinating and light headache only. Is it good or not? I’ve never consult a specialist before doing keto diet but i do my research, is it okay? As of now i’ve loose almost 11lbs. Im just curious how can i get the percentage of fats, protein etc in my meals? Do i need to measure it all? How can i measure the percentage of foods that i need to eat?is there any ways?
Keep Protein Moderate – This is often overlooked by people just starting keto. Protein will induce an insulin response in the body if consumed in high amounts. We want just the right amount. This is a high fat diet, not high protein!
Advocates for the diet recommend that it be seriously considered after two medications have failed, as the chance of other drugs succeeding is only 10%.[9][30][31] The diet can be considered earlier for some epilepsy and genetic syndromes where it has shown particular usefulness. These include Dravet syndrome, infantile spasms, myoclonic-astatic epilepsy and tuberous sclerosis complex.[9][32]
Possible therapeutic uses for the ketogenic diet have being studied for various neurological disorders in addition to epilepsy: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), autism, brain cancer, headache, neurotrauma, pain, Parkinson’s disease (PD) and sleep disorders.[6]

Since the glucose is being used as a primary energy, your fats are not needed and are therefore stored. Typically on a normal, higher carbohydrate diet, the body will use glucose as the main form of energy. By lowering the intake of carbs, the body is induced into a state known as ketosis.
Keto requires a healthy amount of protein to support organ function, red blood cells and muscles. Note that your protein macro also depends on your daily physical activities. Make sure you know your ideal protein macro and stick to it.
First things first.  What is your “why.” This is what will keep pushing you and driving you when your head is telling you to slack. It doesn’t have to be a magnificent “pie-in-the-sky” vision. Simply,
“Yes, tracking macros can be cumbersome and tedious, but it’s absolutely essential during the first few weeks of a keto diet,” says Wittrock. “The diet likely goes against everything you have done before, so tracking your macros gives you feedback and allows you to troubleshoot until you get the hang of it.”
Be aware that it’s not uncommon to experience some negative reactions and side effects when transitioning into this way of eating. Although not everyone, some people will experience the following symptoms, often referred to as the keto flu, but which usually subside within a couple of weeks:
Many workout programs have you consuming a large number of carbs to fuel your workouts. While on keto you don’t need to bulk up on the carbs but you can fill up your glycogen stores so that you have glucose ready for a workout.
Armed with knowledge, your keto food list and plenty of keto recipes, you should be ready to give the keto diet a try! Once your body adjusts, you’ll see increased energy levels, rapid fat burning and all the positive effects that come with ketosis.
Secondly, saturated fat is not shown to be harmful within the context of a low carb diet. It helps improve cholesterol levels, including increasing the amount of HDL (good) cholesterol while decreasing total triglyceride levels. These two factors help lower your risk of heart disease.
If you’ve decided to move forward in trying the keto diet, you will want to stick to the parameters of the eating plan. Roughly 60 to 80 percent of your calories will come from fats. That means you’ll eat meats, fats, and oils, and a very limited amount of nonstarchy vegetables, she says. (This is different from a traditional low-carb diet, as even fewer carbs are allowed on the keto diet.)
As a general rule of thumb, the sweeter the vegetable is – the more sugar it has in it. You have to be very careful with the amount you consume from things such as carrots, onions, and squash. You can easily see the difference in carb counts between the above and below ground vegetables above. Of course, you can eat these in moderation, but you need to watch your intake.
Finally, the goals between the two diets vary. The goal of keto is to enter ketosis, weaning your body off of burning glucose for fuel long-term. With a low carb diet, you may never enter ketosis. In fact, some diets cut out carbs for just a short while, then add them back in.
Most anyone who has struggled with keto side effects or just hasn’t felt good on a ketogenic diet stands to benefit greatly from exogenous ketones during the adaption phase and beyond.  Additionally, for people who have poor liver or gallbladder function, have poor mitochondrial health, or have never tried a ketogenic diet; the process of producing ketones can be stressful.
