There are three instances where there’s research to back up a ketogenic diet, including to help control type 2 diabetes, as part of epilepsy treatment, or for weight loss, says Mattinson. “In terms of diabetes, there is some promising research showing that the ketogenic diet may improve glycemic control. It may cause a reduction in A1C — a key test for diabetes that measures a person’s average blood sugar control over two to three months — something that may help you reduce medication use,” she says.
Eating keto doesn’t mean eating just any kind of fat or stuffing your face with cheese. Instead, it’s about mindfully choosing keto-friendly foods that are high in healthy fats and very low in carbs. Some protein is welcome but don’t mistake keto recipes with Paleo recipes that tend to be higher in protein. With keto, it’s all about the healthy fats that you will learn to work into each meal, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. See 25 of the best keto recipes here, where we’ve either whipped them up at Dr. Axe and found some delicious ones from around the web.
How often you eat is also up to your personal preference. “For most people, I recommend three to four meals per day with a few healthy keto snacks in between,” says Dr. Axe. “This ensures that you’re getting a good mix of protein and fat all day long to keep you feeling energized and satisfied.” That being said, he encourages people to listen to their bodies and tune in to when they’re truly hungry. “If you find that you feel better eating five to six smaller meals spread throughout the day, do what works best for you.”
and combating hypothyroidism. I also forgot to mention I’m a long haul (international) Airline Pilot; a lifestyle that pretty much guarantees chronic sleep debt. Also not good for my autoimmune condition.
Be aware that it’s not uncommon to experience some negative reactions and side effects when transitioning into this way of eating. Although not everyone, some people will experience the following symptoms, often referred to as the keto flu, but which usually subside within a couple of weeks:
This is why epilepsy patients have to get prescribed diets from profession nutritionists. Without getting into true ketosis, dieters risk ingesting an enormous amount of fat—and potentially a lot of saturated fat, if you’re eating animal meat—without any of the fat-burning effects of ketosis. “The fat is the thing that’s problematic for a lot of people on keto,” Fung says. “They basically give a pass for any types of fat and a lot of the recipes encourage saturated fats like butter.” Dieters who are careful to focus on healthy, unsaturated fats like those in avocados may not have issues, but again Fung notes that you end up with a fairly monotonous diet that way, and thus a lot of people end up eating more saturated fats. “To me as a nutritionist, that’s pretty scary.”
A common misconception is that the ketogenic diet is more expensive than other diets out there. And, while it may be a little bit more expensive than buying grain-stuffed foods, it’s much cheaper than many people think. To get an idea, I’ve broken down the costs of some of our most favorite recipes that you can read here >
Here’s one study that shows drops in lesions and skin inflammation when switching to a low-carb diet. Another study that shows a probable connection between high-carb eating and increased acne, so it’s likely that keto can help.
Nutrition data from the 1970s told us saturated fats are bad, causing the United States to enter the era of low fat. During this time, obesity in America soared while consumption of fat (particularly saturated fats) plummeted. Fad, low-fat diet products became the norm at grocery stores as a high-carb, low-fat diet became the preferred method for weight loss. Yet, people kept gaining weight.
Sweeteners like stevia, erythritol, and xylitol can be made a part of your keto diet, but try to buy only the pure versions, as the powdered products usually have a small amount of sugar added as a bulking agent.

So for your first month or so, be restrained but not necessarily strict. If BCAAs help you train and recover, drink them during your training, but don’t guzzle them all day. And if you have any doubts about whether they’re affecting your ketone levels, your test sticks should tell you.
I have been living on almonds/peanuts and meat and coffee with heavy cream. Occasional low-carb veggies (and some berries), but I’m approaching true carnivore status. There was delicious bread; I didn’t have any. There was cake; I didn’t have any. There was wine; I had a little. Because it was a family reunion and everyone knows how seriously diabetes runs in our family, I wasn’t really questioned or challenged about my food choices. I survived and now I’m home. When I got home, my husband fed me a grilled burger and polish sausage.
These individuals would benefit from taking a bulking and binding agent such as psyllium husk, citrus pectin, or my favorite, activated charcoal.  I have people do 2-3 grams of activated charcoal every 3 hours until the diarrhea subsides.
Positive science on ketosis coupled with personal successes passed by word-of-mouth have driven more people to explore the ketogenic diet, says Volek. More recently, the keto diet hints at having a promising therapeutic role in cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Research is still early in many areas, but Volek suspects there will more definitive answers on the wider scope of the diet’s benefits within the next decade.
Healthy fats include saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and certain types of polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), especially omega-3 fatty acids. It’s best to include all types in your diet, with an emphasis on saturated fats, especially compared to PUFAs.
After the December appointment, I was prescribed Metformin and Glipizide. At the end of march blood draw (A1c = 5.7), my doctor removed the Glipizide. He also ordered me a blood glucose testing kit. I started to test my fasting glucose level every morning. In the beginning my readings were anywhere from 120-140.
Keep in mind that if a strict ketogenic diet is being followed, experts recommend that children following the diet be closely monitored, in addition to those who have who are taking medications or existing conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.
Note: you can use up to 2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil and up to 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Keep in mind that BPC takes time to get used to. Start with small amounts so your digestive tract can get used to it. If using Brain Octane Oil, start with 1 tsp and gradually add more.
On the other hand, the types of unsweetened foods you’ll avoid eating on the keto diet are likely the same ones you are, or previously were, accustomed to getting lots of your daily calories from before starting this way of eating. This includes things like fruit, processed foods or drinks high in sugar, those made with any grains or white/wheat flour, conventional dairy products, desserts, and many other high-carb foods (especially those that are sources of “empty calories”). When your brain craves that sweet taste, opt for a no-carb sweetener like stevia or monk fruit.
And while we only store enough glucose for about 24 hours of energy, fat can be stored in the body to provide months worth of energy, which is why people can survive fasting (10). The amount of fat your body can utilize for energy will depend on your body composition and fat percentage.
“It’s not so easy to get an adult body into ketosis,” says Teresa Fung, a professor of nutrition at Simmons College. “That’s why the keto diet is used as a treatment of epilepsy in children or infants—because it’s easier.” Kids are growing rapidly, she explains, so their use of food as fuel is different from the way adults use it. Researchers aren’t exactly sure what those differences are, but Fung says it’s so hard to get adults into deep ketosis (which is likely deeper than a dieter’s target) that often nutritionists don’t even attempt it as a therapy. It’s primarily kids who undergo the treatment today.
Option 2: Whole milk, unsweetened yogurt mixed with full-fat sour cream, a few raspberries, chia seeds, and walnuts. “This type of combo requires careful carb- and portion-counting since all yogurts naturally have lactose, which is a carb,” says Stefanski. “Pairing it with a carb-free protein like two eggs can help balance out the macros.”
First off, you’re in good company. More people—and more athletes—than ever are embracing a very low-carb, high-fat diet and sticking with it for months, or even years, on end. Once they successfully make the switch from using carbohydrates to using fat and ketones for fuel, they find they’re leaner, healthier, and more mentally focused than ever.
Use Magnesium Supplementation:  If you follow these strategies and continue to feel many of these symptoms, consider adding a magnesium supplement to your regimen. I would recommend taking the L-threonate form (such as our Brain Calm Magnesium) in a 1 gram dose – 3x per day between meals.
Hey guys! So I know you’re all looking for something that’s easy to follow and I set out to make something that’s exactly that. A full one month meal plan of the ketogenic diet, the breakdown, the overview, and of course – the meals. Included are all recipes, all breakdowns of final macros, and the daily breakdown of what you should be eating.
Our bodies are incredibly adaptive to what you put into it – when you overload it with fats and take away carbohydrates, it will begin to burn ketones as the primary energy source. Optimal ketone levels offer many health, weight loss, physical and mental performance benefits.
