thank you Dr. Jockers for the informative article. I have hypothyroidism from 3 parathyroid cysts being removed along with 80% of my thyroid. It is under control with Levothyroxine and liathyronine. I have been on the keto diet for almost 4 weeks and am still experiencing heart palpatations, dizzyness and low energy. I have been quite strict and feel disappointed. I have Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and my oncologist was ok with me going on it. I feel like this diet would help me have more energy and help my overall health. Any advise would be appreciated. thank you, Inika
You may see some limitations on your performance when you first begin a keto diet, but it’s usually just from your body adapting to using fat. As your body shifts in using fat for energy, all of your strength and endurance will return to normal.
Depends where you are starting from. If you are at 1.5 mmol ketones, drinking 7g carbs, by itself won’t “throw you out.” How many carbs do you eat for the entire day? Entire week? These will be more indicative factors. It would be good to test your levels if you are curious.
Most anyone who has struggled with keto side effects or just hasn’t felt good on a ketogenic diet stands to benefit greatly from exogenous ketones during the adaption phase and beyond. Additionally, for people who have poor liver or gallbladder function, have poor mitochondrial health, or have never tried a ketogenic diet; the process of producing ketones can be stressful.
Veggies that are slightly higher in carbs (but still low all things considered) include asparagus, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bell pepper, sugar snap peas, water chestnuts, radishes, jicama, green beans, wax beans, tomatoes — 3–7 grams net carbs per 1 cup raw
Life interfered with getting to the gym due to the unexpected hospitalization of my mom and a requirement for me to spend up to 4 hours a day with her. Thankfully I didn’t let that interfere with getting control of my eating. I started Keto and within 3 weeks started OMAD (one meal a day) without difficulty. I also began daily walking on my treadmill. Now I average 8,381 steps a day, with a minimum of those at 30 min of moderate to high intensity. My goal is to be averaging 10,000 before we head to Disney in two weeks.
While I still need to shed a few more pounds, weight is no longer the motivator for me: maintaining how GOOD I feel is my motivator. I have lost about 7lbs in the last month, but I know I’ve also lost a pant size because I have to keep pulling up my size 12 pants every couple of minutes now, whereas they were pretty snug before – I would even have to unbutton my pants to be able to sit down and drive comfortably.
Consider it as another type of keto. You can adapt keto to your chosen lifestyle as a vegan or a vegetarian, although you may need a thorough assessment of whether you need to. Here are a few tips to get started:
What’s more, it’s especially important to make sure your diet is well-planned when you’re eating keto-style, because the foods you can choose from are limited. In addition to checking in with a dietitian if you’re able, Stefanski recommends that you “talk to your doctor and make sure she or he is aware that you’ll be starting a diet that completely changes how your body metabolizes energy.” You might also want to check your most recent bloodwork levels for things such as cholesterol, vitamin D, and other indicators of health because these can change while on keto. That’s because for some people, a prolonged keto diet can result in certain nutritional deficiencies or even high cholesterol. But most experts will tell you that the ketogenic diet is not a permanent lifestyle change (as could be the case for something like the 80/20 approach to eating or a Mediterranean eating style).
Think about what’s happening. Your cells are resisting insulin, causing your body to make a lot more. With all this extra insulin in your blood, you could experience low blood sugars. This is called hypoglycemia, a word made from hypo (low) and glycemia (glucose in the blood). Hypoglycemia is caused by too much insulin in the blood and is a prediabetic symptom. Signs of hypoglycemia include cravings for carbs and sweets, being irritable, moody or depressed, having vision problems, being hungry or dizzy, and the list goes on and on. Your brain is the first organ to feel the effects of low blood sugars.

Restrict your protein intake. Many people come over to keto from an Atkins diet and don’t limit their protein. Too much protein can lead to lower levels of ketosis. Ideally for weight loss, you want to eat between 0.6g and 0.8g protein per pound lean body mass. To help with this, consider using the keto calculator >
You’re transitioning. All of the years of carb intake has trained your body to convert carbs into glycogen so when you transition over to keto, your body needs time to make the proper adjustments. You can’t simply make your car go electric by adding another battery.
Intermittent fasting is very good for the gallbladder in all kinds of ways. Gallstones are caused by two things: high insulin and low bile. IF lowers insulin spikes and concentrates bile to make it easier to digest fats and absorb nutrients from the foods you eat. If you’re eating five times a day, you’re using up your bile reserves like crazy.
If you’re intimidated by all the complex keto recipes out there, find a few simple recipes you love and perfect them. I don’t meal prep (unpopular opinion: I find it really boring and tedious, it sucks the fun out of cooking for me) but I do try to be efficient in the kitchen. I have become a total rockstar at keto chicken tenders. Brine in pickle juice, roll in almond flour, dip in beaten egg, then roll in crushed pork rinds with grated parmesan. I probably eat this once a week, I’m obsessed.
This afternoon I went for my first weigh-in and they said, “congratulations, you lost 3.7 pounds.” Honestly, I looked around for cameras. I did not think it was possible. I struggled on the strictest diets in the past to lose even a half a pound in a week and this, holy crap, I lost practically a pound a day?! What kind of witchcraft fuckery is this?!
The idea with keto coffee is that give your body fuel that is rich in nutrient-dense, blood sugar–stabilizing fat. When I say “fat,” I’m talking about the following: grass-fed butter, coconut oil or MCT oil, and collagen powder made from bone broth.
Variations on the Johns Hopkins protocol are common. The initiation can be performed using outpatient clinics rather than requiring a stay in hospital. Often there is no initial fast (fasting increases the risk of acidosis and hypoglycaemia and weight loss). Rather than increasing meal sizes over the three-day initiation, some institutions maintain meal size but alter the ketogenic ratio from 2:1 to 4:1.
The standard ketogenic diet (SKD) is the most common approach to keto, and the most highly recommended method for beginners. Those who follow SKD are typically looking to achieve weight loss or fat loss. They might also be looking to improve certain symptoms related to depression and mental health, inflammation and cholesterol levels.
So you’ve decided you want to try out the high-fat, low-carb diet, better-known as the fat-burning ketogenic diet. Whether it’s to lose weight, have more energy, or fuel workouts differently, going keto is a popular choice right now. But figuring out a keto meal plan on your own is no easy feat, especially since eating a diet super high in fats doesn’t come naturally to many people who are accustomed to the traditionally carb-heavy American diet. (It’s especially hard if you’re vegan and want to try keto.) But this should help: Keto experts explain how to set yourself up for success, plus provide ideas for exactly what keto foods to eat when you’re first getting started. (While you’re at it, check out these Low-Carb Keto drinks That Will Keep You in Ketosis.)
This is highly unlikely to occur in normal circumstances because for most people it’s a challenge to get into optimal ranges for ketosis so getting into the range where you need medical intervention isn’t likely.
While most other animal-based protein powders contain casein and whey, which can be inflammatory and hard to digest for some people, collagen protein from grass-fed beef is made low and slow to preserve the nutrition.
Most other animal-based protein powders can be inflammatory. Casein and whey are known allergens and egg protein can be quite inflammatory. Collagen protein from grass-fed beef is made in the same way that bone broth is made — low and slow heating to preserve the nutrition.
