Anticonvulsants suppress epileptic seizures, but they neither cure nor prevent the development of seizure susceptibility. The development of epilepsy (epileptogenesis) is a process that is poorly understood. A few anticonvulsants (valproate, levetiracetam and benzodiazepines) have shown antiepileptogenic properties in animal models of epileptogenesis. However, no anticonvulsant has ever achieved this in a clinical trial in humans. The ketogenic diet has been found to have antiepileptogenic properties in rats.

A review of multiple studies in the journal Nutrients found that ketogenic diets are connected to significant reductions in total cholesterol, increases in “good” HDL cholesterol levels, dips in triglycerides levels and decreases in “bad” LDL cholesterol; there are questions as to whether diets high in saturated fat negate these benefits. The same paper reports that a ketogenic may slightly reduce blood pressure, but science is still very scant on this point.

Combine water, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar in quart mason jar. Shake until gochujang paste is mixed evenly. Pour into saucepan and bring to a boil. On a “strict” (standard) keto diet, fats typically provides about 70 percent to 80 percent of total daily calories, protein about 15 percent to 20 percent, and carbohydrates just around 5 percent. I am allergic to coconut in all forms. I am having real issues getting into ketosis and staying there and have no idea what I am doing wrong. I am looking for anything that will get me into ketosis and keep me there. I love butter tea, but is there another source of MCTs that isn’t coconut based?
A: Although desirable, there’s no requirement to eat organic or grass fed. Just get whatever cheap meat and veggies and eggs you can find. Frozen is usually cheaper and wait till something’s on sale and stock up. You don’t need to buy all the fancy things like nut flours, MCT oil, psyllium husk, xantham gum etc. Just keep meals simple and it can all be easy and cheap.

One major downside to the ketogenic diet regarding diabetes is that you’re eating a lot of fat, and that fat may be saturated, which is unhealthy. Because people with type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, there’s concern that the saturated fat in the diet may drive up LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol levels, and further increase the odds of heart problems. If you have type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor before attempting a ketogenic diet. They may recommend a different weight-loss diet for you, like a reduced-calorie diet. Those with epilepsy should also consult their doctor before using this as part of their treatment plan.
I have been on the high fat keto diet for six weeks now. I have only lost seven pounds but I do feel full and haven’t wanted to snack on chips or carbs.. I have been very rigorous about not eating any sugar and had already been off gluten for several years. However, my heart is continually going into afib, running faster and irregular more than ever. I wonder if you have any information about this. I read that I need to watch my electrolytes, so I drink plenty of water and take several supplements. If I don’t get any info, i will have to go off this way of eating. Thanks.

I was making my own bone broth and drinking a cup of it every day. I was also putting collagen in my Bullet Proof coffee AND I was putting gelatin in a smoothie every day. A little is good…too much can cause lots of problems! I had MAJOR brain fog. WHAT?!!!! That’s one of the reasons I was talking all of that. To heal the leaky gut so I wouldn’t have leaky brain! Conklin’s fasting therapy was adopted by neurologists in mainstream practice. In 1916, a Dr McMurray wrote to the New York Medical Journal claiming to have successfully treated epilepsy patients with a fast, followed by a starch- and sugar-free diet, since 1912. In 1921, prominent endocrinologist H. Rawle Geyelin reported his experiences to the American Medical Association convention. He had seen Conklin’s success first-hand and had attempted to reproduce the results in 36 of his own patients. He achieved similar results despite only having studied the patients for a short time. Further studies in the 1920s indicated that seizures generally returned after the fast. Charles Howland, the parent of one of Conklin’s successful patients and a wealthy New York corporate lawyer, gave his brother John a gift of $5,000 to study “the ketosis of starvation”. As professor of paediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital, John Howland used the money to fund research undertaken by neurologist Stanley Cobb and his assistant William G. Lennox.

Keep Protein Moderate – This is often overlooked by people just starting keto. Protein will induce an insulin response in the body if consumed in high amounts. We want just the right amount. This is a high fat diet, not high protein!
