A: Your protein macro is a goal and you should hit it everyday. Feel free to even exceed it. We need protein to preserve our muscle mass. People are worried about gluconeogenesis where excess protein is converted to glucose – however this rarely happens unless you are eating say, a whole cow. Further, GNG is demand driven, not supply driven, meaning it will only occur when your body needs to do so, not by how much protein you feed it.
Add bone broth to your diet, which can help restore electrolytes that are lost during ketosis. When you follow a keto diet, even if you’re drinking a lot of water, you will lose a lot of water weight and also flush essential electrolytes out of our system, including magnesium, potassium or sodium. Adding bone broth is a great way to replenish these naturally, in addition to getting other nutrients and amino acids.
In a fasting state, our bodies can break down extra fat that’s stored for the energy it needs. When we’re in ketosis, our body already mimics a fasting state, being that we have little to no glucose in our bloodstream, so we use the fats in our bodies as energy.
I have found that using this Brain Calm Magnesium throughout the day to be of tremendous help during keto-adaptation. I would recommend using 1 scoop in water 1-3 times per day depending on how your body is responding.
Targeted: On a targeted keto diet, you consume carbohydrates around your workouts to improve athletic performance without knocking yourself out of ketosis for too long. This version is also geared toward hardcore exercisers.
A: First you have to find out whether you’re constipated or just not shitting as much. If you’re constipated as in you feel like you need to go but you can’t and it’s painful, some fibre supplements may help. Otherwise, if you don’t feel the need to go, you just don’t need to go lol. Since you’re eating nutrient-dense food there is probably less waste to be excreted. This is also the case if you’re eating much less food than before. Don’t worry about it unless it’s causing discomfort.
In the first week, many people report headaches, mental fogginess, dizziness, and aggravation. Most of the time, this is the result of your electrolytes being flushed out, as ketosis has a diuretic effect. Make sure you drink plenty of water and keep your sodium intake up.
While the ketogenic diet can be therapeutic for individuals with certain conditions, precautions need to be taken to prevent any severe keto side effects. If you are medications to control your condition, this is especially important.
On a keto meal plan, feel free to fill your plate with low carb vegetables — particularly leafy greens. It’s a great way to get a healthy dose of micronutrients, thus preventing vitamin deficiencies on keto. Options like kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, peppers, spinach and onions are all great options.
I would also like to ask about the difference between using the heavy whipping cream and the butter being thats what butter is made out of…. I’d also ask what the difference between grass fed butter and regular butter is from a nutrition or calorie standpoint?
If you’re already a fan of coffee, then you’re really going to love this recipe for keto coffee, also known as “butter coffee.” What if you’ve never had coffee before? Well, this just may be the cup that makes you a fan.
Exogenous ketones help you get back into ketosis at any time, instead of having to wait a couple of days. You can take them between meals for a quick punch of ketones or before a workout to help you slay gym day.

I’m in ketogenesis now – 3 weeks in. Lost over 10kg. Protein shakes. Great. But what I wanted to add was that i’m Diabetic (2) and quite badly so. I was Injecting insulin twice a day – Novomix (part immediate, part slow acting). But since I went into keto, my blood sugar has been steady between 5-9, normal range. No injections needed. And no hypo attacks either – that occurs below a reading of 4, for me. This is NOT a cure of course – it’s directly related to low carb intake. But I do wonder if discontinuing insulin is partly responsible for my improvement in alertness, activity level and so on. Magnesium tabs, 1000 units twice a day, have also been helpful – I suffer leg and foot cramps due to spinal arthritis – but they had worsened until I upped the dose.
I use a 3-4 cup frothing pitcher and preheat it along with my ceramic pour-over…preheat everything. Then i have a Bamix immersion blender…works so much better than ordinary immersion blenders. My coffee, butter and and MCT oil are all in the pitcher and the im-blender blends it all so beautifully with a sooth foamy top. Just delicious!
Take a multivitamin. “Because you are removing grains, the majority of fruit, some vegetables, and a significant amount of dairy from your menu, a multivitamin is good insurance against any micronutrient deficiencies,” says Jadin. Depending on what your individual overall diet looks like, Jadin says you might also need to add a calcium, vitamin D, and potassium supplement.
Ketone salts: Another form of exogenous ketone supplements come in the form of ketone “salts.” This is where the ketone body (again, typically beta-hydroxybutyrate) is bound to a salt — sodium, calcium, magnesium or potassium generally.
The best type of vegetables for a ketogenic diet are both high in nutrients and low in carbohydrates. As most of you can guess, these are dark and leafy. Anything that resembles spinach or kale will fall into this category and will be the best vegetable to include into dishes/meals.
Everyone has to find their nutritional sweet spot for producing enough ketones and staying in ketosis, but “the core principle of the diet is to keep carbohydrate intake low enough, so your body continues producing ketones at elevated levels,” says Volek. “Your body adapts to this alternative fuel and becomes very efficient at breaking down and burning fat.”
Ok. I have MCT oil. It’s day six. I got a metallic taste in my mouth last night (day 5), and have had 2 hypoglycemia attacks over night (took small amount of OJ and some 2 tbsp of flaxseed meal with half & half). Slowly felt better throughout the day. Bought just about all the adrenal support products you recommend this a.m. My main issue since last night: my heart has been pounding, non stop. I read it might be cortisol induced reflexive hypoglycemia or something? I’ve never been diagnosed with adrenal exhaustion, but I am noticing tiredness and weight gain (I’m 47). So, the adrenal exhaustion perhaps is self diagnosed (I’m know, so annoying for a physician to hear! I hate saying it myself). But, I’m wondering, if I’m just perimenopausal instead, should I continue on keto? If so, will the heart pounding resolve after a certain time? (Days? Weeks?) Plesse excuse how long this is. Just trying to anticipate questions.
Could substituting the coffee with Teecino “herbal coffee” be equally beneficial? Teecino is very coffee-tasting without bitterness, is caffeine-free, and non-acidic. It’s perfect substitute for that something warm in your mug in the AM 🙂 Just curious. Thanks.
A: Some people want to go off keto once they’ve reached their goal weight, others choose to stay on keto or take up a clean-eating diet. I’ve been on keto for almost a decade now. One thing to always remember – if you go back to your old habits you will put the weight back on.
Studies show multiple long-term benefits of a keto diet on an individual’s weight and health. Keto significantly decreased body weight, body fat and body mass of individuals in various studies[*]. Keto has been shown to kick your body into a high-performing metabolic state, increasing fat metabolism during exercise[*]. As long as you continue to consume 1-1.2 grams of protein per pound of body mass, you can preserve muscle mass while still burning fat.
Additionally, constipation may also be a side effect of a change in your microbiome. Your gut bacteria makeup is largely determined by the kinds of foods you eat. When making such a drastic change in your diet, your microbiome will change which can also temporarily change your stools.
To decrease calories, you will have to think about what you need. Most likely, you will need less protein as well. So, keep in mind the portions of sizes of meals. Decrease them as you need to, or see fit.
Lauren Ciccarelli is a writer and former carb addict. Since going keto, she not only lost 35+ pounds and banished her PCOS symptoms, she also found more energy to be awesome and less distaste for lifting weights. Say hi to her on Twitter @ciccarelli.

Get a Vitamix, they are the very best and put nutribullet to SHAME. they are EXTREMMLY HIGH QUALITY!!!!!!! and can take Hot beverage. I bought mine 2 years ago from Target as a refurbished at a Big discount. Check them out on line.
Burgers. Everyone loves burgers, right? Even once I made the switch to Keto, I would still make an occasional allowance, as one bun wasn’t going to break the carb bank. But I came to learn that buns, much like other wheat based products, are in essence, just a delivery mechanism, they hold very little flavor, and in the quest for the best replacement, I made these delightful burger boats.
For breakfast, you want to do something that’s quick, easy, tasty, and of course – gives you leftovers. I suggest starting day 1 on a weekend. This way, you can make something that will last you for the entire week. The first week is all about simplicity. Nobody wants to be making breakfast before work, and we’re not going to be doing that either!
The key to finding keto-friendly dairy is to look at the carb and sugar content.  Regular cows milk is generally out as it’s fairly carb heavy, but heavy creams are a great and tasty substitute.  Experiment with new cheese findings!
Thanks Dr. Jockers…very informative article. Im into pure keto diet almost a week now but started illiminating sugar and carbs 3weeks ago and the side effects that i’ve encountered are frequently urinating and light headache only. Is it good or not? I’ve never consult a specialist before doing keto diet but i do my research, is it okay? As of now i’ve loose almost 11lbs. Im just curious how can i get the percentage of fats, protein etc in my meals? Do i need to measure it all? How can i measure the percentage of foods that i need to eat?is there any ways?
A sales woman came over and asked if she could help me find anything, and I told her I was just looking for jeans in my size and they didn’t have them. I told her I needed a 46, and the largest they had was 42 and I thanked her and began to walk away. She stopped me and just said plainly, “You’re not a 46. You’re a 42.” I told her I wasn’t. I had been measured a couple of months back, and I was a 46 and the pants I was wearing are a 46. She continued to argue with me, and told me my pants were too big. I figured I would humour her, took a 42 into the dressing room, and holy shit. They fit.
Getting started on a ketogenic diet can be intimidating. For most people this is a drastic shift in their eating habits and can be overwhelming. The good news is you don’t need to know everything before you start. You want to have a good base of knowledge so you can make an informed decision, but don’t overthink things! You’ll learn as you go.
If you lift four times or more per week, you might find you require more protein on the ketogenic diet. While the standard ketogenic diet typically limits protein intake to 20% of total calories, the high protein ketogenic diet (HPKD) requires 35% of total calories come from protein.
With the abundance of high carbohydrate foods available in modern times, virtually all human beings that don’t make a concerted effort to restrict carbs are always in a state of glycolysis. There are a number of reasons why ketosis is beneficial when compared to glycolysis, which we will get into later.
If interested in following a facebook group do check out our FB group [catering more to the needs of Indian subcontinent {desis}] and this is my attempt at a keto insta account [have been extremely lazy though]
This is where we have to depart! Sorry to say but you’re on your own. You should have plenty of leftovers that are frozen, ready, and waiting! I know a lot of you out there have trouble with timing and are busy people – so making sure that some nights you make extras to freeze is important. All those leftovers you have in the freezer? Use them up! Create your own meal plan, at first using this as a guide, and then completely doing it yourself. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a sinch – I promise you 🙂
